Inspiration
Have you ever encountered the sight of numerous plastic containers piling up in public trash cans? Despite some governments' efforts to reduce disposable items, waste remains a significant issue. However, there are individuals who have taken the initiative to use their tumblers and bowls at cafes and restaurants, actively striving to make a positive impact.
But how can we inspire even more people to join this sustainable movement?
The MyZERO team decided to build an app that serves as an inspiration for reducing disposable items. Our goal was to encourage users to join their personal efforts in reducing waste and disposable usage. To add a touch of excitement, we introduced a redeeming system and healthy competition with others. MyZERO aims to instill a sense of pride and accomplishment in users, empowering them to contribute to a greener and more sustainable world, one step at a time.
What it does
MyZERO serves as a powerful tool to encourage and motivate people to adopt sustainable habits such as using reusable bowls and tumblers. While it may initially seem inconvenient, once individuals give it a try, they realize it's not as difficult as they may have thought. MyZERO incentivizes this eco-friendly behaviour by rewarding users with points. These points serve as a gratifying reward, making the small challenge of using reusable items a worthwhile and fulfilling endeavour. Through this process, MyZERO inspires positive environmental changes and fosters a greater sense of responsibility towards our planet.
How we built it
The frontend of our project was implemented using React and Sass, providing a dynamic and interactive user interface. On the other hand, for the backend, we utilized PostgreSQL and Express.js to efficiently manage and store data.
Challenges we ran into
One of our challenges was managing time effectively. With limited time and a small team, we were concerned about meeting deadlines. To tackle this, we created a rough to-do list for the entire project and detailed lists for each morning. We scheduled daily online meetings at 10 am to check our progress, discuss tasks for the day, and offer assistance if any issues arose. With these actions, we successfully completed the project with only two members.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our ability to accomplish our goals with a small team. Despite the challenges of limited resources, we executed our project exactly as we had planned. Our cohesive teamwork and efficient planning allowed us to achieve success and deliver a product that we are truly proud of.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained valuable insights into the collaborative process between frontend and backend developers. We learned how to effectively divide tasks and manage time efficiently. These learnings have not only enhanced our technical skills but also strengthened our ability to work as a unified team.
What's next for MyZERO
Moving forward, our focus is on creating a cleaner and more nature-friendly community. Drawing from the knowledge we gained during the planning and research phases of the project, we will be committed to spreading awareness about environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices. Our aim is to inspire and engage more individuals to join the action like myZERO movement which is making a positive impact on the environment and fostering a greener, more sustainable future for all.
