Inspiration
Our inspiration came from our own lives and how we all read and consume news. Everyone of us has their own problems with the news of today. We are either overwhelmed by all the content out there, or just straight up bored by always reading about the same things. We are annoyed by always seeing topics we do not care about or afraid that we are getting more and more biased by only reading what we actually want to read. We wanted to tackle some of these issues today so that we can create the news app of tomorrow.
What it does
myTopics removes all the information overload and clutter from your news and presents you with a minimalist and clean UI. Using Machine Learning to analyse news stories for their topics and adapting to your wishes and interests myTopics gives you a better news reading experience than you could have dreamed of.
How we built it
The Machine Learning part was built in python, the backend was built with Javascript in the next.js framework and the frontend was built with modern typescript using the React framework.
Challenges we ran into
Getting the Machine Learning to work in the way we wanted it to turned out to be a big challenge. Just as big however was the challenge to really figure out the pain points of users and getting the User Experience to feel right.
What we learned
We all learned a lot about the technologies we were using and improved our skills of working under pressure and with way too little sleep a lot. Also by discussing our own feelings about news and brainstorming about how users consume news today has really opened our eyes about the many issues that really plague us today with news.
What's next for myTopics
Fleshing out myTopics into a fully fledged app that will start a new era of learning. We want you to stop simply consuming news, or rather getting consumed by them, and enable you to control your news, be in charge of what you read and bring you features that you didn't even know you would like to have.
