What it is

MythologyNow is an app for listening to mythology. It has 102 Greek, Norse and Egyptian stories, told across 451 narrated episodes in seven languages. While an episode plays you can follow the transcript, which is synced to the voice, and add a background sound like rain or a fireplace.

Twenty of the stories are also illustrated comics. Every character that appears in them has a profile with its own art, 446 in total, along with the places and objects of the myths. When you finish all the episodes of a story, you unlock a collectible card for that god or creature. There are 46 so far.

There is also an oracle you can ask about any god, place or relic. It answers and links to the story where that character appears. And inside the app there is a vote to choose the next mythology we add. At the moment it is Japanese against Hindu.

Why we made it

We have liked mythology since we were kids and we could not find an app that told the myths properly. Most of what exists is either a reference article or a long podcast. We wanted something you can listen to in five or ten minutes, with the art in front of you, and with the whole story instead of a summary.

How it is built

The app is Flutter with Riverpod. The backend and all the content live in Supabase, subscriptions go through RevenueCat, and the oracle runs on Gemini through a Supabase edge function.

The content comes out of a pipeline we built: the script for each episode, the translation into seven languages, the art, which follows one fixed style so that every character looks like it belongs to the same world, the narration, which uses synthetic voices, and the final mix with music. The website is Next.js on Vercel and holds the whole encyclopedia. Our promo videos, including the demo above, are rendered in code with Remotion.

How we use RevenueCat

The app has a hard paywall: you see the onboarding and then the plans. None of the pricing is hardcoded. Prices and packages come from offerings, so we can change them from the dashboard without shipping an update, and we already have a second offering ready with the launch price. The paywall reads the trial length from the store product and checks whether the user is eligible before showing it as a trial, so the copy never promises something the store will not give. We also send an event at every step of the purchase with the plan and the price, and purchases go to Meta so we can see which ads bring buyers.

Problems we hit

The launch was going to be on September 1. Two days before, we reviewed the onboarding and the paywall, decided they were not good enough, and delayed. We rebuilt both and released quietly on September 11.

Synthetic voices do not know mythology. They read names like Chang'e as ordinary words, so the pipeline now sends a phonetic spelling to the voice and keeps the real spelling in the text the user reads.

Unlocking cards had to be decided on the server, otherwise progress would depend on the device. The call that claims new cards returns a short payload, so the app fetches the complete card before playing the reveal, which is why that animation waits a moment.

Scale is its own problem. 451 episodes times seven languages is 3,157 audio files, so changing one line of a script means regenerating and re-syncing that episode in every language.

What we learned

People search for myths by describing them instead of naming them, and some of them are solving crosswords. One of the searches that reached our site was "vain queen who boasted that she was more beautiful than 18-across". We built a page that matches all 446 descriptions to their names and shows how many letters each answer has.

Our Japanese pages get twelve times the click rate of the English ones with the same content, which is one of the reasons Japanese is in the vote.

On the promotion side, nothing carries over between networks. The same video got 336 views on TikTok and 69,182 on Facebook in 31 hours, and our TikTok audience turned out to be 52.7% British and mostly between 25 and 44.

What's next

Send the launch email to the waitlist, turn on the launch price, and build whichever mythology wins the vote.
