Inspiration
Latvian mythology is a really interesting part of Latvian culture. Alise's mother has told her stories from her grand-grandma - how she knew a lot of interesting facts and stories about Latvian mythology and signs. Sadly there isn't a lot of information or ways to learn about it, the best you get is one boring lesson at school. So having no to little knowledge about the topic BUT a lot of interest, we decided we could educate ourselves and others about this topic!
What it does
This is an RPG with a card-based battle system that you use to defeat enemies. The cards feature different Latvian mythology signs, what they mean/do and what they will do in battle. Each card has different abilities and can affect the enemy. So far our cards are:
- Ugunskrusts - deals 4 DMG but makes the enemy angry
- Zalktis - confuses the enemy for 2 turns OR until hit (can be used only 1 time )
- Ūsiņš - decreases the chance of getting hit to 50% and +2HP
- Māras līklocis heals 5 HP
- Māras krusts - deals 2 DMG
Each time you use a card, the sign on it disappears and leaves the card blank. In your turn, you can draw on an empty card any sign, to later use in battle. Drawing helps to remember the different signs and their abilities! The enemies in the game would be different Latvian mythology spirits and creatures, like the Devil (Velniņš), werewolves (Vilkači), dogman (Sumpurnis) and others. So far we have only the Devil. Learning about them, their strengths and their weaknesses will help you defeat them!
How we built it
Most of the time was spent figuring out the battle system, so its balanced - fun but challenging. Before coding, we made our cards on paper, gave each card an ability, and then played it like a board game! Each time we changed some rules and abilities to fix things up and make everything fit together. Then of course Alise had to code our battle system using Unity. In the meantime, Anna figured out the design for our game elements and drew them using Krita.
Challenges we ran into
- It was challenging to figure out such a unique card battle system that we had never seen before, but playing it using paper cards helped.
- Making the scrolling for cards was hard, as there wasn't a lot of information about it and it had to be integrated with other RPG elements
- Designing the game elements in such a short time
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We figured out a unique idea about a topic we love
- We made a game in a very short time
- The art came out very nice and fits with the theme
- The code for the card value system is very well-made
What we learned
- Don't get hung up on ideas and small details
- How to make a battle system
What's next for Mythology Sign-Off
In future updates, we would add more enemies, friends and new signs that you can collect, flesh out the story of the game, and make it open-world so the players can explore. Also research the signs and creatures more carefully so the game has all the right information about them.
