Inspiration

As a student, I know how difficult it can be to keep track of assignments, study sessions, deadlines, and progress all at once. I wanted to create something simple that would help students stay organized without feeling overwhelmed. My goal was to turn the idea of a study planner into a practical tool that students could actually use every day.

What it does

MyStudentPal is a student planner designed to make studying more organized and manageable. Students can create tasks, track their progress, plan study sessions, keep track of deadlines, and see their overall progress from one dashboard. The planner also saves information using local storage, so important tasks and planning data remain available after refreshing the page.

How we built it

MyStudentPal was built from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I designed the interface with a focus on simplicity and ease of use, then implemented the different pages and interactive features myself. JavaScript handles features such as task management, progress tracking, navigation, and local storage. The project was deployed using GitHub Pages.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was building the project while working on a tight hackathon deadline. I had to debug issues with JavaScript, local storage, page navigation, and eventually GitHub Pages deployment. The deployment process caused a 404 error because my project files were initially nested inside an extra folder. I also had to troubleshoot paths and the splash-screen animation so that everything worked correctly on the live website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I was able to take an idea and turn it into a fully functional, publicly accessible website within the hackathon timeframe. I designed and built the interface, implemented the core functionality, tested the application, debugged deployment issues, and successfully launched it online. Most importantly, I created something that I can actually use as a student myself.

What we learned

This project taught me a lot about building a complete web application rather than just individual pages. I learned more about connecting HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, using local storage, debugging, managing a GitHub repository, and deploying a website with GitHub Pages. I also learned how important testing is, especially when moving a project from a local environment to a live website.

What's next for MyStudentPal

I would like to continue developing MyStudentPal beyond the hackathon. Future improvements could include a study timer, upcoming study-session reminders, calendar integration, better deadline tracking, customizable subjects, and eventually a database and user accounts so students can access their planner across different devices.
