Inspiration

A prevalent issue that countless students experience every day is the dangers of crimes in their environment. In fact, according to findings published in June 2022 from the School Survey on Crime and Safety, there were

  1. Crimes in 2019-2020
  2. 43% were forcible sex offenses
  3. 33% were burglaries
  4. 11% were motor vehicle thefts To combat these dangers, mySHIELD’s mission is to allow students to freely and safely roam their surrounding environments without the fear of being in danger!

What it does

mySHIELD is a mobile app that shields you from danger fields! It bridges the gap between people and resources. What sets mySHIELD apart from other apps is that it reaches a new height of safety that students have never experienced before! Our app curates crime data from other students, thus, amplifying students’ voices in order to create a safer environment for other students.

How we built it

Our app was built using the design application Figma.

Challenges we ran into

Ideation process posed significant challenges. We originally created an app to address natural disasters alerts problems, but halfway through the development process of our original idea, we realized that we were too focused on creating solutions that we forgot the central issue at large. However, we quickly resolved the issue by collectively brainstorming and designing an app that both addresses the central issue and proposes accessible solutions for its users! mySHIELD directly confronts the issues of safety among university students by informing individuals of danger zones that are safe or unsafe to go to.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As beginners, this was our first ever full-fledged hackathon, we are happy with all that we accomplished from navigating the entire experience to our final presentation. mySHIELD provides accurate, reliable, and unbiased crime reports by pulling information directly from national university records. We have a cohesive history of incidents reported by students themselves to determine high, slight, and low danger zones. Our other features include defense resources & safe space locators.

What we learned

Problem solving, critical thinking, working in a team and technical skills are some of the many things we learnt during this hackathon! We took advantage of the innovative workshops and mentorship included in Technica, and we had the opportunity to learn how to use the features in Figma for the first time as well.

What's next for mySHIELD

Incorporating a feature to share live real time incident updates would add great value to this app. With this hackathon being just the start, we hope to continue innovating the app to create real-world changes in our communities!
