Inspiration

SAT is one of the global standardized test—which consists of reading-writing and maths—for college admission recognized by Ivy Schools and other International Universities. The organizer, Collegeboard, provides free resources of questions in its questionbank site, however user has to select the questions manually and even export it as PDF, in addition user couldn't track their mastery level automatically. Another thing is that, most students who are going to take SAT also tend to learn a lot of vocabs that are commonly used in SAT (reading & writing), there are bunch of free books for this resource but students couldn't effectively study and memorize most of 800+ common SAT words.

What if there were a free unified platform for students to study 800+ common SAT words effectively and do practice with questions directly sourced from College Board's question bank, so they wouldn't have to select questions manually and export them as PDFs?

Most UIs and sound designs in this platform were inspired by RevisionDojo, Duolingo, and Khan Academy.

What it does

  1. Practice Rush A feature to do practice endlessly with questions directly sourced from Collegeboard's questionbank.

  2. Bookmarks Feature This allows user to review questions that are marked by them, and another feature is that, there is a folder system to categorize questions.

  3. Personalized Insights & Stats Through the dashboard, user able to see their insights to know their mastery level of individual subjects' topics.

  4. SAT Vocabs wordbank Compiled from a free pdf book, it shows list of 800+ most common SAT Vocabs. Through this feature, user also able to know their mastery level of the vocabs they have learnt through Flashcard feature.

  5. Vocabs Flashcard Feature. As mentioned before, this flashcard feature encourages student to learn the vocabs by writing their own sentence.

  6. Practice Vocabs & AI Integrated This allows user to do practice & review of the vocabs they have learnt through flashcard feature. Two of six practice modes are integrated with AI that encourages user to input the definition of a vocab or to write a sentence, then the AI will validate user's input. (It uses Deepseek R1 provided by OpenRouter)

How I built it

I built this with NextJS, React, and UI uses ShadcnUI and component libraries from 21st.dev (website). I also utilized GitHub Copilot specifically Claude Sonnet 4 to help me build this project. The use of AI is primarily used to make a duolingo-styled button, optimize the state management, and to generate function to save user's data locally by using browser's local storage.

Challenges I ran into

  • I had to organize Collegeboard's questionbank messy API & data structure
    • I built my own api route within the platform (using Nextjs API Router) that fetches directly to messy Collegeboard's API to get list of questions or the question's details (like the content, answer choices, etc)
  • I had to compile a free pdf book with list of most common SAT vocabs into JSON structured file (this is for the wordbank, flashcard, and vocabs practice feature).
  • Integrating AI into the platform I thought, it's going to be expensive for me to integrate AI into my platform; however, there is a free API resource provided by OpenRouter that allows me to integrate the Deepseek R1 for two of the vocabs' practice modes.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Practice feature that directly sourced from Collegeboard's questionbank
  • There is no login/signup feature : all of the data collected, which is used to generate personalized practice, insights and state, is saved locally within the browser's local storage.
  • The sound effects : one of the examples is when cursor hovers over a button or clicks a button
  • Personalized Insights & Stats : this feature enable students to know their mastery levels on individual subjects' topics.
  • SAT Questionbank tracker that allows user to track questions they have answered within the platform.
  • SAT Vocabs wordbank (compiled from pdf book into structured json file)
  • Integrated Deepseek R1 into the platform

What I learned

  1. Web app/platform doesn't need to have a login/signup feature; there is a way more easy thing and that is to utilize browser's local storage. We could make login/signup feature once we feel like we need to scale.
  2. OpenRouter provides a variety of free AI models (it's more than Deepseek, but I feel like Deepseek R1 sounds way more fancy than the other, thats why I chose the R1)

What's next for MySATPrep – Gamified & Personalized SAT Prep

In the future, I will add login and signup feature just in case there are students who use 2 devices for this platform. Next, I think I will add AI Assistant to help student to solve Maths questions with desmos. Another thing is that, I will add AI generated personalized plans to study vocabs and to do practice session thus they could achieve their scores goal.
