MYPass: Your Malaysia Travel BFF
Inspiration
When my friend Priscilla planned her trip from Indonesia to Malaysia, she was a bit lost on what to do first. Years away meant things had changed—but not Malaysian gov's outdated forms (ahsdask). She only learned about the MDAC e-Arrival Card after bugging ChatGPT about it. Plus, finding legit local food or activities without a guide? Super tough. That’s why we built MYPass: to be the savvy local pal Priscilla needed, making Malaysia travel easy and authentic.
What It Does
MYPass is your pocket guide to Malaysia, making travel smooth and fun:
- Trip Planning: Select your travel preferences and MYPass crafts a custom itinerary, like a 3-day Penang food crawl.
- Checklists: All the document lists needed, your passport, forms, flight tickets, all in one.
- Local Spots: Skip pricey (overhyped) tourist zones with tips for hidden gems, like KL's cozy cafes, plus a stamp-collecting game to track your visits.
- Easy Docs: Get quick guidance for Malaysia’s e-Arrival Card, no paperwork headaches. List of documents you'd need for your travels to Malaysia.
It’s like a friend who knows Malaysia inside out, minus the cheesy tourist traps.
How We Built It
We kept it simple and slick:
- Tech Stack: React with Tailwind CSS for a vibrant, mobile-friendly UI.
- AI Power: Used Groq’s free LLaMA 3.1 via Bolt for smart suggestion features. AI OCR.
- Clean Design: Split the app into chunks (planner, checklists, etc.) for easy updates. Data stays local for offline use.
No rocket science here—just tools to make travel awesome.
Challenges We Ran Into
Getting trip suggestions to feel spot-on (like “check out Ipoh’s food stalls” instead of generic “visit Ipoh”) took some prompt tweaking. Groq’s free tier limits meant we have limitations. Designing a UI that’s practical (think Malaysia’s bright colors) not enough time to spend more on this project, but we crafted a look that’s clean. Also, prompting skills. It gets better! Deciding what feature to include also made my brain mushy, but Priscilla was a good sport since I have her as the target user demo that I'm designing for. We think about all of the pain she encountered while prepping for the visit!
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
We’re pumped about:
- AI Suggestions: MYPass delivers spot-on plans, like a Kuala Lumpur night market tour, in under a second. Still playing with Rimau and how it reacts to the prompts and what it generates.
- Slick UI: Priscilla called it “this is all generated by AI?? kerennn” after testing. *keren means cool in Indonesia
- Rapid Prototyping: This was seriously done in a day. With tokens already taken away. :/ But Bolt was easy enough to navigate, given its not my first time using it. But yes, it can handle fast jobs.
MYPass makes Malaysia feel like home for travelers.
What’s Next for MYPass
We’re ready to make MYPass even better:
- Stunning UI: Revamp the interface with smoother animations, bolder Malaysian-inspired colors, and a more intuitive flow to wow users.
- Smarter Suggestions: Tweak AI prompts for hyper-local tips (like Penang’s hidden hawker stalls) and tailor plans based on past trips.
- Bug-Free Vibes: Squash UI glitches and optimize the structure. Stamps have bugs, esp. on the homepage one. Def fixing that up soon.
- Real Backend: Add Supabase for user accounts and saved trips, syncing data seamlessly.
- API Connections: Plug in local APIs (e.g., Ticket2u for events, Grab for transport) to suggest live festivals or ride options.
- Government backup: Probably government API to call the forms and sync it back to immigration. Or a collab! We can even do campaigns, integrate the train passes that we have so users can go back and forth in the city.
MYPass is here to make Malaysia travel effortless, local, and totally epic!
