An app to help minimize food waste, user scans barcodes of food items, tells you the expiration date & recommends recipes based on the ingredients you scan, notifies user when foods might expire.

Inspiration

The amount of food waste when measured up to the amount of people facing food insecurity was inspiration for the idea.

What it does

It keeps a log of what ingredients the user has in their kitchen, providing a countdown estimate of how good the ingredient is good for. Once the food reaches 10 days left, it reaches yellow mode. Once it reaches 5 days left, it becomes red mode which is urgent.

How we built it

We used Python coding language and Tkinter, using a GUI interface, buttons and tab indicators, calendar.

Challenges we ran into

Front-end development was where we had faced our most and biggest challenges. We had issue with trying to configure a splash screen and having the code input images.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly, the entire project overall. This is all of our first 'Hack-a-thon' and full stack program, so we were just proud of ourselves and the work that we put in.

What we learned

Full stack programming, time management, collaboration, problem-solving, redirecting.

What's next for MyPantry

Building in a barcode scanner with the intentions of becoming a mobile app.
