Inspiration

We have millions of conversations with friends and family in messaging apps, and we post countless photos on social media. Yet the moments that shape a relationship often become scattered across chats, camera rolls, and years of history.

I wanted to build a more intentional place for those stories: a reunion after a year apart, a child leaving for college, a parent’s ultrasound photos, or a loved one who has passed away. Mymory is inspired by the idea that every important relationship deserves its own living timeline—not just a stream of messages.

What it does

Mymory is a private, relationship-first memory app for families, couples, friends, new parents, and people remembering loved ones.

Each relationship has its own space, where users can:

  • Save photo memories with captions
  • Add lightweight daily emotional check-ins
  • View a chronological relationship timeline
  • Set future events and see countdowns
  • Revisit “from this day” flashbacks
  • Create separate spaces for different relationships
  • Preserve memories of loved ones through a respectful memorial experience
  • Begin a child’s story before birth with milestones and family notes

For example, a college student can share a three-second check-in—“great,” “okay,” or “not feeling well”—without the pressure of a long conversation. Families can save moments from reunions over multiple years. Parents can reserve a space for a baby before birth. And people can continue honoring someone they love through letters, photos, and visits.

How we built it

Mymory was built as a mobile app with React Native, Expo, and native date-picker support.

The app uses relationship-scoped state so each relationship keeps its own members, start date, memories, check-ins, future events, and timeline. Data is persisted locally on the device, allowing the prototype to retain changes after the app is reopened.

I tested the experience on my iPhone through Expo Go, focusing on a calm, personal interface with warm colors, concise prompts, and simple navigation.

How I used Codex and GPT-5.6

I collaborated with Codex and GPT-5.6 throughout the project as an engineering partner.

I made the key product and design decisions: the relationship-first structure, the privacy-focused direction, lightweight check-ins instead of clinical mood tracking, support for memorial spaces, and the warm visual tone.

Codex and GPT-5.6 accelerated the workflow by helping translate those decisions into working features. They supported the implementation of navigation, relationship switching, local persistence, photo memory creation, timeline views, date-picker interactions, future-event countdowns, check-in flows, and README documentation.

The collaboration was iterative. I reviewed the app experience, identified what needed to become functional, and used Codex to quickly move from interface ideas to working mobile flows.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was making the app feel emotionally meaningful while keeping it simple enough for daily use. I did not want Mymory to feel like another social feed, messaging app, or complicated journal.

Another challenge was organizing data correctly across multiple relationship spaces. Memories, check-ins, events, and settings needed to remain connected to the right relationship rather than appearing in one shared feed.

Building functional mobile interactions also required careful handling of local persistence, image permissions, photo selection, date input, navigation, and mobile layout testing on iPhone.

Finally, memorial support required special care. The design needed to acknowledge loved ones respectfully without making remembrance feel like an error state or a missing feature.

What we learned

This project reinforced that the best product ideas are often about organization and emotional context, not just adding more content.

I learned how relationship-scoped data can make a product feel more personal, how lightweight interactions can encourage connection, and how local-first persistence can make a prototype feel real early in development.

I also learned how much faster an iterative build can move when product decisions stay human-led while Codex and GPT-5.6 help implement, refine, and troubleshoot the technical details.
