MyLabs — XPRIZE Project Description

💡 Inspiration
I didn't set out to build a health tech company. I set out to understand my own blood work.
Like millions of Americans, I see a naturopathic doctor who runs comprehensive labs — thyroid panels, metabolic markers, hormone levels — the kind of testing that goes deeper than a standard annual physical. Every time results came back, I'd get a PDF, a patient portal notification, or a printout with numbers and reference ranges. And every single time, I'd stare at it thinking: what does this actually mean for me?
Is a TSH of 2.3 good? Is it better or worse than last time? My TSH has been all over the place for the past 18 months — but no one showed me that visually. No one connected the dots. I had to piece it together myself from scattered PDFs across multiple appointments.
That frustration is what built MyLabs.
According to the American Clinical Laboratory Association, Americans undergo approximately $14billion laboratory tests annually. Yet most patients receive results they don't understand, in formats they can't organize, with no way to see trends over time or share them easily with their care team.
MyLabs changes that.
🔨 What I Built
MyLabs is a browser-based health data platform that gives individuals one centralized place for all their lab results — with AI-powered plain English explanations and trend visualization across multiple blood draws.
Live URL: trymylabs.app
Core Features:
- PDF Upload — upload any lab report PDF and MyLabs parses and organizes your biomarkers automatically
- Trend Visualization — click any biomarker like TSH and see a graph of every reading across all your lab dates, so you can see your health story over time
- Out-of-Range Alerts — flagged biomarkers in red and yellow so you immediately know what needs attention
- AI-Powered Explanations — powered by the Gemini API, MyLabs explains what each biomarker means in plain English, in the context of YOUR specific results and trends
- Category Organization — results grouped by system (Thyroid, Metabolic, Hormones, etc.) for easy navigation
- Doctor Sharing — one-tap sharing of your complete health picture with any provider (the "Apple Pay for health data" vision)
The AI Difference:
Instead of seeing "TSH: 2.91 mIU/L" and wondering what it means, MyLabs + Gemini tells you:
"Your TSH is 2.91 mIU/L, which falls within the normal range of 0.40–4.50. However, looking at your trend over the past 18 months, your levels have fluctuated between 1.8 and 4.2 — a range worth discussing with your doctor, as it may indicate your thyroid medication or protocol needs adjusting."
That's the difference between data and insight.
🧠 What I Learned
I'm not a traditional developer. I'm an AI consultant and entrepreneur based in Sarasota, Florida. I built MyLabs collaboratively using Claude Code — which means I learned that the barrier between "having an idea" and "having a real product" is smaller than most people think, if you know how to work with AI tools.
I also learned that health data is deeply personal. When I uploaded my own labs and saw my TSH trend graphed for the first time, I actually got emotional. Seeing 18 months of fluctuation visualized in seconds — something my doctor had never shown me — made the problem MyLabs solves feel very real and very urgent.
Key technical lessons:
- React + Vite is a powerful combination for fast, responsive health dashboards
- Local storage works beautifully for privacy-first prototypes before adding cloud infrastructure
- The hardest UX problem in health apps isn't showing data — it's showing the right data without overwhelming the user
⚡ How I Built It
MyLabs was built using:
React + Vite — fast, component-based frontend Gemini API — AI-powered plain English biomarker explanations Firebase — Firestore (database) + Authentication (backend) Stripe — subscription billing and paywall Google Cloud — hosting and infrastructure Vercel — deployment and continuous delivery GitHub — version control and collaboration Claude Code — AI-assisted development throughout
The development workflow was collaborative and iterative — I described what I needed in plain English, Claude Code implemented it, and I tested and refined. This IS the future of software development, and MyLabs is proof of concept.
🚧 Challenges I Faced
Making health data understandable without being scary. The first version showed all 100+ biomarkers at once — overwhelming for anyone. Finding the right UX balance between comprehensive and digestible took multiple iterations.
Parsing lab PDFs. Every lab company formats results differently. Building a reliable PDF-to-structured-data pipeline that handles LabCorp, Quest, and other formats required significant iteration.
Being a non-technical founder. I had to learn enough to direct the build without getting lost in the weeds. Working with AI tools accelerated this dramatically — but it still required understanding what I was building and why.
The emotional weight of health data. This isn't a to-do list app. People's health information is sacred. Building something that handles it responsibly — with privacy first, clarity always — required constant intentionality. A data-display bug: biomarkers with "less than" style reference ranges (like <200) were incorrectly showing as "in range" even when they weren't — a genuinely serious bug for a health app, which we caught and fixed during testing. And partway through the hackathon we discovered a security exposure in how our Gemini API key was being handled, which led to unauthorized usage and a temporary service suspension. We rotated the key, hardened access, and Google restored service after review — no user data was ever exposed, but it was a real lesson in treating API credentials with the same seriousness as any other production secret.
Also most people dont know where their lab work is, with a doctor, a facility.
🚀 The Vision
MyLabs is the foundation for something bigger.
A world where every person walks into every medical appointment with their complete health story in their pocket — understood, organized, and shareable in one tap.
The morning bioscan for nutritional deficiencies. The AI that notices your ferritin has been trending down for eight months before your doctor does. The supplement recommendation based on what YOUR body is actually showing, not a generic protocol.
That future is closer than most people think. MyLabs is where it starts.
