University focuses mostly on academic work and students have limited opportunities to explore career options outside of their study area. We are told to set goals, but how do we set goals if we don’t yet know ourselves properly, if we are unable to visualize where each path could lead us. This web app will help students to learn more about themselves, their existing skills and identify their strengths and weaknesses from an objective point of view. Students can take personality tests and our site would combine that information with their existing array of skills to suggest possible career options. They will then be suggested list of skills they can choose to work on based on the career they have set their eyes on and set goals in a fun and gamified way. They would gain some points each time they logged a new activity in the experience tracker. Essentially, we want to create an experience tracker that allows student to list down activities they have taken part in and the skills they gained from those experiences. There are varies opportunities students can explore in the Skills Building Hub and they can talk to fellow students in the Community section.

As university students in the time of Covid19, we face many uncertainties as to our future and what opportunities are out there. We get flooded with emails from different companies (TargetJobs, JobsLive, etc) about work experience, but it’s confusing and too much to process. We wanted to make something to organise and narrow down our options and to clearly state our goals. Something to combat the confusion we face during this covid period but also to be useful after the pandemic. Starting with zero HTML knowledge, we coded a website to allow students to choose specific skills to work and clear up their ideas. With links to approved resources and a personality test, our goal was to help students identify what they should be working on to define their career path and thrive despite the pandemic.

Furthermore, we wanted to create a centralized platform where students can store all their career-oriented information. Though we were unable to code for data storage just yet, steps forward include allowing the user to store past CVs and cover letters, and ensure they target their current CV to the job they are applying for. Furthermore, our website would allow you to keep track of of all your experience to allow for easier recall when stringing up a CV.

We started by brainstorming our ideas on AwwAPP and finalised to MyKindaCareer. The carried on more detailed project planning on Whimsical where we designed the achitecture of our web app and its features.

For the coding side, we started by watching Glitch and website designing tutorials on Youtube. We learnt the basics of HTML and javascript along the way, such as tags.

One of the major challenges we faced was the fact that none of the team knew any html nor css and so to build our web app we had to learn html, css and javascript from scratch. There were many times where our website would break down and it was necessary to debug and communicate with the rest of the team.
