MyJar: Savings Goal Tracker — Project Story About the Project

MyJar is a personal finance application designed to make saving money feel simple, motivating, and rewarding. The app transforms abstract savings goals into visual, animated jars that fill as users progress toward their financial targets. Whether saving for an emergency fund, a vacation, education, or any other goal, MyJar provides a warm, engaging interface that turns everyday saving into an encouraging experience.

The app features:

Visual Goal Tracking: Create separate savings jars for multiple goals with animated progress Smart Planning: Automatic calculation of weekly/monthly saving targets based on deadlines Detailed Insights: Track transaction history, portfolio totals, progress charts, and savings analytics Privacy-First Design: All data stored locally on device—no account required Customization: Multiple themes (light/dark/system), currency options, accessibility features, and biometric locks What Inspired It

The inspiration came from recognizing a gap in how people relate to their savings goals. Traditional budgeting and finance apps often feel clinical and restrictive—they focus on what you shouldn't spend rather than celebrating what you can save.

The concept of "savings jars" has deep psychological roots: physical jars create tangible progress visualization and emotional satisfaction. The goal was to bring this tactile, rewarding experience into the digital realm by combining:

Visual feedback: Animated jars that visually fill as users add funds Behavioral psychology: Multiple small, focused goals (rather than one overwhelming target) Intentional design: A warm, hand-drawn aesthetic that feels personal and encouraging How We Built It

Tech Stack:

Frontend: Modern mobile development framework with responsive design Backend: Local-first architecture using device storage Features: Real-time progress calculations, transaction management, and data visualization

Development Process:

Research & Design: Studied behavioral finance and user psychology around savings motivation Prototyping: Created wireframes focusing on visual jar metaphor and progress animation Core Features: Built transaction management, goal targeting, and progress calculation engines Analytics: Implemented charts, insights, and portfolio summaries Polish: Added animations, sound design, theme support, and accessibility options (motion reduction, sound toggle)

The entire codebase prioritizes local data storage, eliminating the need for user accounts and ensuring privacy by design—all savings data remains encrypted and on the user's device.

What We Learned User Psychology Matters: Visual progress (the filling jar) proved more motivating than numerical targets alone. Animations and sound feedback create positive reinforcement loops. Privacy as Feature: Users deeply value knowing their financial data stays local and private. "No account required" became a major selling point. Simplicity ≠ Boring: Careful attention to micro-interactions (animations, sounds, color) makes a financial app feel less utilitarian and more rewarding. Flexibility is Key: Users have diverse saving scenarios—emergency funds, purchases, life events. Multiple separate jars beat a single budget tracker. Accessibility First: Features like motion reduction and sound toggle aren't afterthoughts—they're essential for inclusive design. Challenges We Faced

  1. Balancing Visual Appeal with Data Accuracy

Animating progress jars needed to feel smooth and satisfying while maintaining precise financial calculations. Off-by-one errors or rounding issues could break trust.

Solution: Separated visual rendering from financial logic, with rigorous testing around edge cases.

  1. Local Data Management at Scale

Storing everything on-device without a backend meant handling data synchronization, backups, and edge cases (app crashes, device storage limits) entirely client-side.

Solution: Implemented robust local storage with transaction journaling for data integrity.

  1. Motivating Long-Term Goals

Users can lose motivation on goals that take months or years. Weekly targets help, but so does celebrating milestones.

Solution: Built in progress visualization, completion shelves for finished goals, and reusable jar templates.

  1. Personalizing the Experience

Different cultures and regions have different financial goals, currencies, and date formats. A one-size-fits-all approach felt inauthentic.

Solution: Implemented extensive customization: currency selection, date formats, themes, and accessibility toggles.

  1. Privacy Without Sacrificing Features

No cloud sync meant no easy backup, no syncing across devices, and complex sharing scenarios.

Trade-off: Accepted these limitations as the necessary cost of absolute privacy. Users appreciated this choice, and local-first became our key differentiator.

The Impact

MyJar has helped users visualize and achieve savings goals they previously found abstract or overwhelming. By combining behavioral design, privacy, and delightful micro-interactions, the app proves that financial tools can be both practical and emotionally engaging.
