Inspiration
This project was inspired by the current climate and condition of the world. Everyone has seen the strings of earthquakes wreaking havoc all over the world, and this was our way of trying to support the fight against climate change. Most people don't think about their individual impact, and this website was developed to give people a perspective on how they affect the environment around them.
What it does
Our website gives users a way to track their carbon emissions. Users have the ability to calculate their emissions based on daily activities such as driving, using electricity, and food intake. The idea is to give people a way to hold themselves accountable and learn about the impact of their actions.
How we built it
We created the design for our website using Justinmind. The website would be created utilizing an API that calculates carbon emissions based on user input, and Flask, a web development framework. Our API was sourced from MyClimate, Shape our Future. MyClimate is a provider of CO2 offsetting and carbon offsetting consulting, and they advocate for sustainability.
Challenges we ran into
Some challenges we ran into involved connecting the API with our website design, through Flask. Because the API relies on so many variables to do the calculations, the process ended up being very tedious.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our idea, and that we were able to learn how to integrate an API even though we could not completely get it to work. We are proud that we are able to make a working demo website that showcased our idea despite not being able to execute it as intended. Additionally, we think did well working through the problems and frustrations we came across during the planning process.
What we learned
Our team learned about Figma, Justinmind, and we learned how to implement an API! We also learned how to use Flask.
What's next for MyImpact
In our later updates of MyImpact, we want to give users an opportunity to track their emissions over a longer period of time. Although being aware of your emissions is important, we realize that this is only one step on a long road. We would love for our users to be able to track their emissions in all walks of their life, as well as learn about how to combat excessive emissions and practice better habits. We also want users to be able to access the site as an Mobile App, rather than a Web App.
