Inspiration

Whilst brainstorming our heads as a collective group we were focusing on a problem-based approach, bouncing Ideas back and forth with each other one of our group members had veered into the course of Immigration and how hard it is to adapt for foreigners recently settling into a new country. Though this idea only came into fruition on a whim while we had been on the subject of how settling in his hard and adjusting to all the different things that come rushing to you all at once, as well as some cultural diversity. On the topic of Integration for foreigners and as we each started to add our own bits and pieces on the take of how sometimes it can be overwhelming to settling into a new country, we had decided to create an application that would help students and those alike be decently versed on the adaptation themselves so as to not feel that pressure one normally gets after stepping out of what they’d usually call “Home” for them.

What it does

Users can:

  1. Look for jobs! All jobs were scraped off https://www.jobbank.gc.ca
  2. Look for events! It's a great way to meet new people and make some friends
  3. View the "safety map". Users can pin places on a map that are unsafe at a certain time. We don't want anyone getting stabbed!

How we built it

The Development process although tedious at first to figure out what gelled with each other to make a smoother development pipeline. We Implemented the use of not only google API but other technology stacks on the backend, and basic html and CSS functionality for the frontend side of the application. For the backend on our team two members had worked on the Implementation of the back end with the provided data necessary whilst the rest work on the front end, the system we took to efficiently work on each page and delegate tasks between each other was each of us deciding to work on a specific page of the application as well as have proper communication between each other in order to avoid the margin for error whilst making changes to the repository as to not override each others progress.

Challenges we ran into

During the entire process before hand whilst attempting to reach a starting point it was definitely up in the air with the ideas we had been throwing together to form something so there was a bit of a challenge when it came towards how we would Integrate different technologies that we could collectively handle pertaining to each of our specific skillsets. We also faced challenges regarding some of the datasets we had looked into previously that we needed to work with In terms of properly converting into something usable before eventually landing on something that could be usable and applied to the work scheme of what we had in mind.

We also faced some challenges regarding the tech stack as we had not all been familiar with the technologies, we had been discussing among ourselves that we had been going to use, we had been a bit hesitant to Implement some of these technologies due to some lack of experience in each area. Upon a deeper exploration we had learnt more than we had originally known coming out whilst engaging with these technologies, lots of time went into how we workshopped these ideas and worked amongst ourselves and individually to understand the inner workings of the code and how it was implemented, overall through effective team communication and proper research on what we had integrated along the way we had been able to provide a feasible scalable application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For some of us, this is our first hackathon, so this submission an accomplishments because we got it done!
