Inspiration
This is a project that I had in mind a few weeks ago so I took this hackathon as a sign that I had to develop it now. Planning, designing and travelling have always been something that I enjoy, and this project is the perfect combo. I also used two of my favorite colors to design the website and the planner.
What it does
- MyHoliday allows building a printable planner based on available destinations/activities from the MyHoliday website. The planner can also be edited.
- The planner shows the approximate duration of the chosen trip and its approximate total cost.
How we built it
- This project uses Bootstrap, JQuery, PHP, and SQL (database)
Challenges we ran into
- As someone more comfortable with front-end development, working on this project improved my confidence in using back-end technologies and motivated me to get out of my comfort zone.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Developing this useful web app with a simplistic design. I am personally glad that most of the functionalities I planned on having are working. However, I am planning on adding more functionalities in the future.
What we learned
- Using Jquery, PHP, and SQL together.
- It is easier to use back-end technologies and databases rather than sticking with front-end tools and working with local storage. Back-end technologies also allow the implementation of more functionalities.
- It's the first project where I used the LIMIT and OFFSET SQL clauses (for the trending destinations). I had to read sql documentations and articles to make sure everything is working.
What's next for MyHoliday
- Implement filter by price and duration with search results
- Use online API to get unlimited international destinations
- Make the destinations draggable in the planner to change their order
- Improve UI and responsiveness
