Inspiration
With medical access and treatment being so vital for the wellbeing of humans, we wanted to design a dual-sided system that makes the process of receiving medical treatment, learning more about medical issues and tracking personal growth in health easier for patients and doctors. In addition, with rising health insurance costs and healthcare contributing to 16% of the US GDP, we wanted to create a system that would make insurance companies better set insurance premiums for their customers.
What it does
Our project is a mobile app for Android devices that allows patients to track their fitness information, medical history, food intake, and other health factors to track their overall health progress. Our algorithm then offers a recommendation to insurance companies regarding the risk of a certain patient based on the data we collect.
How we built it
We use technology to ease the process for patients to deal with doctors and to ease the process for insurance companies to set premiums for their customers. myHealthCentra was built using the Android App Studio environment with IntelliJ and Oracle's Java 8 programming language.
Challenges we ran into
Our team was unfamiliar with developing Android apps as we only had experience with iOS development with Swift in the Xcode environment before. Midway through the project, Android App Studio prompted us to update our software, and after doing so, our app would not run on our phones or the virtual machine. We re-used some of our code but had to restart a lot of it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our final product and the potential impact it can have on society. We are also proud of our growth as developers as a result of completing this project as we were unfamiliar with Android app development before this hackathon.
What we learned
We learned how to critically think and provide people with an innovative solution to a real-world problem. We learned that experience from completing projects is the best way to grow as a developer. In addition, we also gained skills with Java, Android App Studio, and API integration in mobile apps.
What's next for myHealthCentra
We hope to gather feedback during judging and make changes to our application based on the feedback we receive. Alongside this, we also look forward to working with fitness tracking devices like Fitbit and Samsung Gear to provide our users, patients and insurance companies, with more reliable data and information.
