Inspiration
We’ve experienced how easy it is to forget what’s already in the fridge or lose track of what needs to be used soon. That can lead to food being forgotten, unnecessary grocery purchases, and avoidable waste. We wanted to make it easier for households to keep track of their food together.
What it does
MyFridge helps households see what groceries they have and what they need. Members can add food items, track expiration dates, and keep a shared grocery list. The app also includes a receipt-scanning prototype to help users add groceries with less manual entry, along with notifications to remind them about food that may need attention. Users can create or join separate households, so they can manage groceries for different places, such as a dorm and a family home.
How we built it
We built MyFridge as a JavaScript web app. The frontend uses React, and the backend runs on Node.js with Express. The frontend requests household data from the backend, while Socket.IO sends list updates to household members in real time. We divided the work across Git branches and brought our contributions together on the main branch.
Challenges we ran into
Bringing separate contributions together was one of our main challenges. As we merged our branches, we worked through merge conflicts and made sure the frontend, backend, and individual features worked together. We also refined the website through trial and error as we learned how the different parts of the app fit together.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We’re proud to have turned a familiar household problem into a working product as a team. We brought together a shared grocery experience, household management, and a receipt-scanning prototype in one project.
What we learned
We gained experience collaborating through GitHub branches, resolving merge conflicts, and integrating separate contributions. We also learned more about how frontend and backend code communicate and how app features work together.
What’s next for MyFridge
Next, we’d like to improve the user experience, make receipt scanning more reliable, and save household data between sessions. We’d also like to explore additional ways to help households keep track of their food and prevent waste.
