Inspiration

A little over 10 years ago on March 11, 2011, The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami happened. It caused over 15,000 deaths, over 6,000 injuries, and more than 2,000 people are still missing. One of the biggest issues during this was the lack of information of, for example, what to bring during evacuation. We knew that preventing a disaster like this may not be possible but spreading valuable information like this could potentially save lives and minimize casualties in the case that something like this were to happen again. Although in the US natural disasters of this scale rarely occur, we believe that acting beforehand and preparing is worth it if lives can be saved.

What it does

myD.A.D. is a unique app that gives information of signs of a disaster, how to prepare, and how to keep yourself protected during and after disasters. We also knew that everybody has unique circumstances. Whether it be you are pregnant, you have children, or you have a mobile impairment - whatever your circumstance may be-, myD.A.D. helps you create a personal list of items you should bring during evacuation.

How we built it

through xcode and swift. The more code heavy aspect of the app- creating your personalized list- was programed through arrays and sending those arrays through different screens in our xcode file.

Challenges we ran into

Transferring data from one view controller to another has always been a challenge even in past hackathons. This time, we were able to send arrays through different view controllers by creating an instance variable for the array within each of the relevant view controller classes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to complete this app in a short 2 day span.

What we learned

how to use swift, xcode, and many of their quirks

What's next for myD.A.D. (my Disaster Awareness Device)

a website that will give more in depth knowledge, and hopefully to integrate emergency alarms when a disaster or disaster watch is in progress. Also, we know that evacuation routes/locations plays an important role in evacuation from natural disasters. This time we decided that creating such an element was out of our abilities but hopefully we will be able to incorporate such an element.
