Inspiration
We were inspired by apps like Clue, which make tracking health attributes simple and convenient. We wanted to encourage people to take COVID-19 seriously by implementing recommendations from the CDC and providing daily, accessible symptom checking.
What it does
myCovid allows users to input daily symptoms and compare them to CDC guidelines. The app can then make recommendations to shelter in place and provides progress checks for users to track their health throughout the quarantine period.
How we built it
We used Android Studio to create myCovid, coding in Java and XML.
Challenges we ran into
As a team of all beginners, it was a steep learning curve to learn a new SOA, XML, and app engine, Android Studio. However, we're proud of picking up these technical skills on the fly and figuring out custom UI elements such as the quarantine symptoms checklist and calendar.
What we learned
In making this project we learned about version control systems, Android Studio, and UI design techniques.
What's next for myCovid
In the future, we hope to incorporate data from the CDC alongside geolocation services to track the local density of COVID cases and provide information on the crowd status of nearby hotspots (eg. testing sites and popular stores). We also aim to implement further symptom analysis as well as data on local weather and disease activity to eliminate false positive COVID recommendations.
