Inspiration
We were inspired by tower defense builders such as Plants vs. Zombies and BloonsTD. In addition, this years hackathon theme, Enchanted Forest , influenced to center our games around mushrooms and mythical woodland creatures.
What it does
It's a tower defense game where you go through multiple waves with quizzes and educational information about the greater abilities of mushrooms, an often forgotten yet vital part of our ecosystem.
How we built it
We utilized Gemini to help us understand the Kaplay library to make our workflow efficient and introduce us to a new library we have never worked with prior to the hackathon. We worked in multiple stages. First was project planning, then asset developments. Afterwards was a cycle of coding a debugging, working step by step on mechanics like mushroom towers, spore generation, and quizzes.
Challenges we ran into
We had a few challenges when it came to the expansion of certain features. For example, when clicking buttons on pop ups, the click would spawn mushroom towers onto the map as well as proceeding through the pop up.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our ability to build a game within 24 hours. Using an entirely new language to complete a project within this time frame is something we are all proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to use a new library for game development and improved our abilities in using JavaScript.
What's next for Mycelium Defense
We plan to expand mechanics such as enemies and kinds of mushroom towers. Additionally, we may try try to introduce boss waves and more stages.
