Inspiration
College students use many different apps for different purposes — WhatsApp for communication, Instagram for sharing, LinkedIn for careers, and different websites for events. None of these are built for college life. Because of this, students miss important updates, struggle to find teammates, and do not know what others in their own college are working on. This inspired us to build MyCampus, a platform that brings the entire college experience into one digital space.
What it does
MyCampus is a college-first social and networking platform. It gives students a campus feed where they can see posts, projects, hackathon requests, and announcements from their own college. Students can also use filters to view content from other colleges.
Students can:
Connect with classmates and students from other colleges
Share their projects and ideas
Find hackathon and project teammates
Discover campus events and opportunities
Build their personal portfolio website and professional resume using AI-powered tools, helping them showcase skills, projects, and achievements easily
How we built it
MyCampus was built using modern web technologies:
Frontend: React.js
Backend: Firebase
Database: Firestore
Authentication: Firebase Auth
We used Firestore’s real-time features so that when a student posts something or sends a connection request, it updates instantly for others.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the main challenges were:
Designing a system that shows only college-specific content while still allowing cross-college filters
Handling real-time updates without refreshing the page
Managing user connections and requests properly
Keeping the interface simple while adding powerful features
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working college-only social feed
Implemented real-time connections and requests
Added college filters to explore other campuses
Created a clean and user-friendly interface
Successfully connected students across different colleges
What we learned
Through this project, we learned:
How to build a real-time web application
How to manage users and data securely
How to design for real student needs
How to turn an idea into a working product
What's next for MyCampus
In the future, we plan to:
Add verified college emails
Introduce private campus groups
Improve event and hackathon tools
Add messaging between students
Expand MyCampus to more colleges
MyCampus aims to become the digital home for every college student.
