Inspiration
Ever since I was a child, I constantly asked my mom for a pet dog, and every single time, the answer was a firm "no." Fast forward to adulthood: I still desperately wanted a dog, but being a bit broke, getting and maintaining a real pet wasn't financially feasible just yet.
So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and build a self-sufficient digital puppy for myself! What started as a fun personal solution quickly evolved into My-Woofie: an intelligent pet care management platform and desktop companion designed to make pet ownership (digital or real) interactive, organized, and delightful.
What it does
My-Woofie is an intelligent pet care management and tracking platform that acts as a digital companion for dog owners. Key features include:
- Interactive Pet Companion UI: An engaging interface featuring dynamic pup animations that react to user interactions and real-time state changes.
- Smart Reminders & Time Controls: Contextual alerts for time-sensitive care, with customizable hidden controls that appear on click to keep the core interface uncluttered.
How I built it
- Frontend: Built with React / Next.js, styled with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive layout.
- Animations & Interactivity: Leveraged Framer Motion and custom CSS physics/math to handle smooth cursor tracking and behavioral animations for the digital pup companion.
- State Management & Logic: Utilized JavaScript/TypeScript state handling for real-time temporal checks (e.g., dynamic day/night cycles and sleep modes based on system time).
Challenges I ran into
- Cursor-Tracking & Physics Logic: Fine-tuning the pathfinding and animation physics for the digital pups so they smoothly and continuously follow the cursor across the screen—rather than stopping midway—required balancing precise distance calculations with performance constraints.
- Temporal State Syncing: Handling system-time-dependent triggers (like nighttime sleep animations) across varying time zones without breaking user overrides or static defaults.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
(apart from finally getting a dog!!)
- Playful yet Functional UX: Creating an interactive pup companion that feels alive and responsive without compromising on productivity and tracking efficiency.
- Performance-First Animations: Achieving buttery-smooth cursor tracking and dynamic physics entirely in the browser without UI lag.
What I learned
- Advanced Motion & Tracking Mechanics: Deepened knowledge of dynamic canvas/DOM coordinate mathematics to smooth out multi-agent cursor-following algorithms.
- User-Centric Technical Writing: Learned the importance of humanizing technical documentation and export sheets.
- State-Driven UI Design: Mastered clean UI decluttering by hiding advanced configuration parameters behind intentional user clicks while maintaining strong default behaviors.
What's next for My-Woofie
- A cat variant for my meow lovers!
- A stronger dashboard for your weekly-monthly-quarterly updates.
