We were inspired to make My Wellness because we discovered that, with the transition to online school due to the pandemic, students were experiencing deteriorating mental health. Thus, we decided to create a website that promotes healthy study habits and also ensured that students were taking care of their mental health.
My Wellness is a website that promotes mental health care among youth with an emphasis on education. Students are able to study using multiple time management techniques while also being able to care for their mental health. Our website provides a mental health track with 4 different mental health care activities and a studying track with 4 different study methods. My Wellness uses a point system where students can receive a mental health point for every mental health care activity they do or a study point for every study session they complete. By setting daily goals to reach a certain amount of points, they can keep track of their studying progress while also ensuring that they are receiving the necessary care for their mental health. In addition, they can utilize our journal page to reflect on their day which can help reorganize thoughts and be helpful for their overall wellbeing.
We built My Wellness using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and the online IDE, replit.
Over the course of the hackathon, we ran into the challenge of positioning the HTML elements using CSS. In addition, as first-time coders, we found javascript to be especially challenging as we had to understand the fundamentals of javascript in order to complete the point system. In the end, we are proficient with using local storage functions of javascript.
We are extremely proud of My Wellness. Prior to this experience, we had little experience in Web Development, but we were able to create a useful resource for students that promotes productive studying habits while also maintaining their mental health. We are especially proud of the built in features such as the timers for the study techniques and mental health activities to ensure productivity as well as the journal that allows users to reflect on their day.
Creating My Wellness has allowed us to become proficient at web development. In addition, we have become more aware of the need to care for mental health and effective study methods as a result of the focus of My Wellness.
We hope to buy a domain for this website in order to reach more students in hopes that they can benefit from this resource both academically and for their mental health.
