Inspiration: Periods can be a hard and painful time for most women. We wanted to make a space where anxiety and stress can be released through supportive resources. Since periods are often stigmatized, it can be difficult to receive appropriate resources and support systems. Through this website, we wanted to ease that obstacle that all women have to face.
There are countless period applications out there. However, based on our own experiences, we could never find THE perfect app that satisfies all of our needs and desires. Most period apps don’t have an intimate feel to them or something that feels personal. By creating this website we wanted to create an intimate space where an individual feels comfortable. Our drive to create a comfortable space is what inspired the name My Tea Shop. A Tea Shop has a cozy vibe and is soothing through both the atmosphere and their drinks. We wanted the same atmosphere for our website as well.
What it does:
My Tea Shop provides resources that make an individual feel comfortable with their femininity and also find accurate information about menstrual cycles. It offers a total of 5 useful features that can reduce the limitations most period apps have. The features are the following: Period info, Playlist, Minigames, and Exercises/Yoga poses that can relieve the pains. The web is also aesthetically pleasing with a nice blend of calming charcoal and pastel green.
How we built it
We used HTML/CSS, and the online editor was Replit. With different skills, we all helped to make My Tea Shop a real thing! We also used Figma to build a prototype of My Tea Shop. All the images on Figma are from Google Images.
Challenges we ran into
The distance was probably our biggest downfall. We are all separated around North America and have different time zones. Being able to connect and work at the same time was challenging. Our skills are varied, so being able to work on separate things increased our knowledge, and helping others with their tasks increased our skills as well. Photos and Images would often not register, so we had to re-read our code a few times, making sure we had everything correct.
Another challenge we ran into includes having different technologies and coding platforms. Some platforms weren’t compatible with our computers, however, we were able to overcome this challenge through communicating and working collaboratively on replit and google docs.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We were all relatively new to working with HTML, and a few challenges were making sure our images were available, and styling was another big challenge. Since we were all online, there was no way to work together at the same time, except for online editors. We were able to overcome the obstacle of distance thanks to these editors, we were able to work together in real-time and see the changes we made.
What we learned
We all learned How to develop fast and simple web applications How to transition prototype to development How to manage our time efficiently to finish on time About each other over the weekend!
What's next for My Tea Shop
With more time, we would be able to fully style My Tea Shop to its full potential to make it easier to use, and closer to the Figma prototype. We plan to develop this further and make My Tea Shop app for androids and IOS to increase the users and accessibility. We also plan to add more customizable features. Devpost submission starts here:
