Inspiration
Pitt's dining halls sometimes don't have the most healthy options. It can be hard to eat healthy when all the food around you isn't. We wanted to help solve that issue.
What it does
Our app takes live data from Pitt Menu's and feeds it to Google Gemini API. Gemini then recommends items off the menu based on user input!
How we built it
We got data from PittAPI about what items were on the menu for Pitt dining halls. We then fed that into Gemini and asked it to produce some healthy options for us. We used react for the front end of the website and flask for the backend.
Challenges we ran into
When trying to setup the website, we had troubles connecting the front end and the backend. Another thing was processing the data from the PittAPI json files.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Getting the Gemini API to work correctly, getting the data from PittAPI.
What we learned
Back end is hard and takes time. API data processing can be tricky.
What's next for My Panther Pal
Hopefully one day we can integrate this app inside Pitt's own websites/app to help students with a healthier lifestyle!
