Inspiration

The inspiration came from the universal fear of the familiar turning threatening. I wanted to explore the psychological horror of hearing a loved one’s voice, only to discover it’s being used by something sinister to manipulate and terrify.

What it does

My Mom’s Voice is a psychological horror short film where creatures mimic the voices of family members to gain access to rooms, creating tension, suspense, and a chilling sense of vulnerability.

How we built it

Eleven Labs → Generated all voices and sounds to convincingly imitate human speech and create eerie audio effects. Luma AI → Produced the video sequences, helping visualize the creatures and their interactions in a lifelike yet surreal manner. Google Gemini → Photo of the miniature DaVinci Resolve → Edited the final video, including color grading, sound integration, and pacing to maximize suspense.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making the AI-generated voices sound convincingly emotional and human-like without losing the horror element. Integrating AI video content seamlessly with live editing also required careful adjustments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully created a tense, immersive horror experience where viewers could feel the fear of familiar voices turning dangerous. The AI tools allowed us to push creative boundaries in both sound and visuals.

What we learned

We learned how to combine AI-generated audio and video with traditional editing workflows to produce a polished, emotionally impactful short film. We also gained experience in using AI to enhance psychological horror storytelling.

What's next for My Mom’s Voice

Future plans include expanding the story into a longer format, experimenting with more AI-driven visual effects, and exploring interactive horror experiences that make the audience part of the suspense.
