Inspiration

The idea for this project came about when we started thinking about mental health struggles and we were inspired by our own experiences. Specifically, we focused on executive dysfunction because as students we are away from our support systems, so it’s sometimes hard to hold ourselves accountable to do tasks. And so that’s how we came up with our mental buddy, Mira.

What it does

The mental buddy, Mira, gamifies the task of cleaning your room. Cleaning your room can be an overwhelming task, but Mira simplifies this into 3 smaller tasks (cleaning clothes, trash, and books). So when you're feeling executive dysfunction this can simplify this big task into smaller more manageable tasks.

How we built it

The project was built in 8th wall, blender and mixamo were used for animation, and then Photoshop was used for textures and graphics.

Challenges we ran into

Our lack of familiarity with the coding language gave us a lot of difficulties especially when it came to the manipulation of the code. Things would break or not work and we had to decipher what was wrong and search for solutions.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overcoming the challenges we faced and ending up with a project we can be proud of that is close to our vision is our greatest accomplishment. We’re proud of what we were able to achieve and that we tried.

What we learned

We learned to just try and if you fail, keep trying. You can plan all you want, but things sometimes don’t work out so just start. Iterate upon each failure and it will bring you closer and closer to what you need. We gained more understanding of our capabilities and learned from every mistake.

What's next for My Mental Buddy

What we envision for the mental health buddy is more features such as room scanning and for it to recognize what room it’s in. And also data tracking related to that room like it knowing what your room looked like when it was clean Connecting to that we’d like to create more scenarios not just cleaning your room but maybe doing the dishes, laundry, or any other tasks. Finally, we’d like to do a study using our AR experience and see if it addresses the problems we outlined in our problem statement. And based on that we can iterate upon the project to see what we could improve upon. And we envision it as a long-term experience the user can use in their daily life to gamify tasks to make them less daunting. And encourage users to complete tasks and manage their executive dysfunction.
