Inspiration
Tomogotchi, Club Penguin, NeoPets, the saturation of the IoT market
What it does
Users attach microcontroller-based uPets (mu-pets) to local nodes which connect them to the internet and the central server and social media app. By feeding their little IoT uPet, allowing it socialize at the node with other uPets, and interacting with it over the web application, a user can make sure their uPet is happy, healthy, and full of energy.
How we built it
Arduino UNO development boards networked over an I2C bus as slaves to a BeagleBone Black acting as the master on the bus. UNOs are the uPets with their own stats and personalities. The BeagleBone served to get the uPets online and communicating with the web server. The web server was built with a back end in Python's Flask framework serving a Javascript front end.
Challenges we ran into
Deployment to Heroku for hosting and actually getting the Flask application on the internet came to a screeching halt as the application was developed with SQLite which is not supported by Heroku. Progress lagged as we tried to figure out how to convert to PostgreSQL and deploy.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Communication of data between a Python application back end and a Javascript front end.
