Inspiration

We took inspiration for our app model based on previous winners of a contest called Samsung solve 4 tomorrow. The idea behind the contest was to create something that could benefit the community and aid others. Keeping this in mind, I created our app, MY Life.

What it does

MY Life is an app that has a variety of components all designed to aid students in their transition to high school. In doing so we hope that students will feel less stressed and have a larger community that can support them during high school. On the mental health side, MY Life has Make Your Life Better, MYLB for short, which contains an anonymous chat and an anonymous call with a licensed clinical social worker. These outlets can allow students who are too scared to reveal their identity to discuss problems with a trained professional. The chat or call would always end with providing follow-up resources so the student understands that they can continue their healing. On the educational side, MY Life contains Make Your Life Easier, MYLE for short, and it offers proven learning strategies and websites to help students succeed, group chats to discuss specific classes, and online tutor sessions. These tools allow students to discuss and create a tight-knit community among people in similar courses to all help push each other to strive to succeed. On the extracurricular side, MY Life extends with Make Your Community Better, MYCB for short, which implements a club and local interest search tool, and a club calendar/announcement feature. The club and local interest search tool will ask students to answer questions and will take keywords from their responses and generate local opportunities to find a new passion. This allows students to connect with their community and discover new hobbies. All of these parts of MY LIFE combined will help us achieve our overall goal: aiding high school students.

How we built it

For the look and feel of the app, we will work with art students and coders to develop an aesthetically pleasing app that encourages students to use the tools we provide. We will do this in a variety of apps including Figma and React. The back-end development and the software of the app will be created by our computer science students who will create algorithms to establish seamless coordination between web pages and will be completed in Python.

Challenges we ran into

We have had no major problems so far during the creation of MY Life. A minor problem we ran into was verifying that the data we collected to create the app was accurate. By sending out forms to collect data we ran into the risk of people responding with a bias or not filling out the survey with their complete honesty. This could discredit our app, but we were able to create an algorithm that filters our extremities and takes into account those who spent time on it and those who did not.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are extremely proud of the idea we created and the current progress of our app. We conducted large amounts of research to ensure that our app would benefit our target audience and be as efficient as possible. We have a great concept for an app that can transform our school into a more accepting area where everyone can feel comfortable in. We are proud of our desire to leave a positive impact on our school community and plan to make it everlasting.

What we learned

Discussing with counselors and teachers we gained insight into how stress is created through the teacher's point of view. Additionally, we can connect with various student groups of different religions, ethnicities, genders, etc to gain an understanding from the student’s point of view. This holistic understanding of our student body allows us to be one step closer to achieving our goal and was extremely beneficial in the creation of the mockup designs of our app. It also helped us identify problems within our school that we can target to try and help more students.

What's next for MY Life Mental Health App

For the complete development of our app we focus on working more on the back-end development of the app to finish the coding aspect and create a holistic app. Once the app is fully complete and ready to be installed on student's phones, we plan on installing it on every high schooler’s phone as a tool and resource students can use to aid them mentally, educationally, and socially. We can introduce it during freshman transition and show students how beneficial it can be to them.
