Inspiration

Currently studying Japanese with every chapter introducing new vocabularies and grammar. Japanese verbs can be transformed into various forms to provide a context for a sentence. Several classmates have difficulty remembering rules for the conversion of 1 form to another. A handy mobile app might just be the solution to digitize what we have learnt in class and for easier reference while doing assignments

What it does

Enter a Japanese verb and it will return results that match the search input, together with all the forms of the verb. Input is not restricted to the basic, formal "ます" form. Inputs can be in Imperative, Casual, Volitional form etc. My backend API will identify the input and it's original form and search the database using the original form as a key.

The App can also return a list of exceptional verbs which do not conform to rules for the Verb Group they are in.

How I built it

Using Spring Framework to build a REST API which any platform can perform an asynchronous call to. Built an Android App using Android Studio which integrates with the API that I have created

Challenges I ran into

I started the project off using a web based interface because I was more familiar with Web Technologies but it proved to be inconvenient as users had to open browser in order to navigate to my website. Attempted to build on Android with 0 android experience.

Character encoding for Japanese characters to ensure that search input matches. Thorough understanding of the Japanese grammar in order to apply transformation rules correctly.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Built my first Android App. I can do my Japanese assignments with much more efficiency Built my first REST API

What I learned

Google Analytics for Android Advertisement models and App monetization Android Programming

What's next for My JP App

Extend the features that will provide more convenience for my classmates Include Adjectives which have different forms A list of common searched verbs
