Inspiration
I’ve always loved casual pet games and wanted to create something that blended emotional connection with the magic of giant pandas—creatures adored worldwide. Watching how families bond over gentle, playful virtual pets sparked the idea: a game where every interaction feels personal, whether it’s talking to your panda or decorating its habitat for Christmas.
What it does
My Giant Panda lets players nurture a panda cub through daily care (feeding, cleaning, playing), AI-powered voice chats (it reacts to your mood!), customize appearances/scenes, join holiday events, and share moments with friends. It’s designed for short, joyful sessions—perfect for busy lives, and safe for kids too.
How we built it
We used Unity for 3D rendering/animations, Swift/Kotlin for mobile native development, and Firebase/AWS for cloud sync. We integrated social SDKs for sharing, ASR/TTS APIs for voice interaction, and built a custom visual design system with layered backgrounds and dynamic lighting to make the panda feel alive.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing the 3D panda’s performance on low-end devices (2GB RAM) was tough—we optimized assets and used streaming for non-core content. Ensuring Child Mode compliance (no ads/purchases without parental approval) and maintaining 24dp clearance for UI buttons across all screen sizes also required rigorous testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Crafting a seamless, joyful experience that works for both kids and adults—with distinct, age-appropriate visual styles. The AI voice interaction feels natural (it responds to happy/angry tones!), and we kept the app under 100MB without losing premium visuals.
What we learned
We mastered cross-device sync logic, GDPR/COPPA compliance for global markets, and balancing monetization (optional ads/subscriptions) with user experience. Most importantly, we learned how small details—like subtle fur animations or action-specific music—make virtual companionship feel real.
What's next for this project
We plan to add more holiday events (like summer beach habitats), expand voice interaction to more languages, and introduce gentle mini-games tied to panda conservation (to share awareness). We also want to refine the custom pattern upload feature for even more personalization!
