My Garden

Inspiration

With the pandemic shutdown, some people turned to baking bread while others resorted to turning their neglected backyards into beautiful gardens and incorporating plants into their homes. With experiences of living through our parents introducing new plants, we were inspired to create My Garden, a platform to overcome the challenging steps of designing a garden. With the overwhelming amounts of information on what kinds of plants there are, how much water to give them, soil type, sun exposure, and more, we hope this can make it easier and more approachable to achieve a beautiful garden.

What it does

How we built it

Using a Python Flask, we built a database to collect user information. We imported csvs into the file structure. We used sqlite to create a database for login functionality. We used CSS to improve the aesthetics of the website. We used custom Python classes to store objects that have multiple unique attributes.

Challenges we ran into

There were many challenges along the with including Replit breaking down, causing us to try out different ways to access our code. We also didn't manage our time that well between spending a lot of time brainstorming, agreeing on an idea, and attending different workshops that took us away from our work. The time crunch and pressure really got to us as we tried to get things to work with little time left. Additionally, we were definitely very ambitious and certainly too ambitious to complete in the time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our functional log in systems, working custom classes, and multiple subpages. Additionally, as a team, we are proud of working together and being a team.

What we learned

We definitely learned that we need to manage our time and be more realistic with planning. Some of us had new experiences coding databases and in certain languages like HTML, CSS, or more.

What's next for My Garden

If we had more time, we would expand it even more to have all the features we originally intended it to have. With things like an interactive map of the garden personalized to each user's space or a comprehensive list of native plants to the region and simple, in-depth planting instructions, My Garden has the potential to help so many gardeners.
