Inspiration The inspiration for "My Chores, My Games" came from the daily, universal battleground that every parent knows too well: getting teenagers to do their chores. Traditional chore charts are uninspired, flat, and rely entirely on constant parental nagging. At the same time, teenagers willingly dedicate hours of focus to leveling up in video games. I realized that if we could bridge the gap between real-world responsibilities and digital game progression—using a neutral AI referee to handle verification—we could completely reshape family dynamics and eliminate household friction. What it does "My Chores, My Games" turns domestic tasks into immersive, old-school, "work-to-win" RPG side-quests. Parents set up a custom "Reward Vault" tied to their children's genuine gaming obsessions (like Nintendo titles or Honkai: Star Rail). Teenagers activate a quest, take a "Before" photo of the mess, complete the chore, and submit an "After" photo. The backend processes the change, prevents cheating, and dynamically updates a personalized rewards dashboard. There are no microtransactions or shortcuts; progress is earned entirely through classic hard work. How we built it As a non-programmer, I designed the entire logical architecture, user onboarding flow, and psychological incentive mechanics myself. I then used Google AI Studio and Gemini as my development partners. By utilizing natural language system prompts, I trained a custom Gemini agent to handle complex, multimodal visual logic without writing standard code from scratch. Challenges we faced The number one challenge was designing a bulletproof anti-cheat system. Teenagers are incredibly tech-savvy and will naturally try to upload duplicate photos, older images, or stock kitchens to claim points. Overcoming this meant developing a strict, automated before-and-after change-detection protocol, forcing the AI to evaluate contextual markers, spatial alignment, and ambient lighting to guarantee real-time verification. Accomplishments that we're proud of We are incredibly proud of designing a system that completely flips the script on household dynamics. We didn't just build another dry checklist; we created a psychological loop that shifts teenagers from resentful avoidance to proactive task ownership. More importantly, we proved that a parent with zero coding background can step into the role of a tech product architect, leveraging Gemini to translate real-world family insights into advanced AI logic. What we learned We learned that the true power of AI isn't just about automation—it’s about empathy and context. By building with Gemini, we discovered how advanced multimodal computer vision can be used to solve incredibly human, localized problems like family communication and teenage accountability. We also learned how to structure strict programmatic constraints (like our before-and-after change detection protocol) using plain English instructions rather than thousands of lines of traditional code. What's next for My Chores, My Games The immediate next step is expanding our prototype out of the sandbox and into a sleek, functional mobile interface using no-code design tools. Long-term, we plan to implement our connected digital-wellbeing framework to let the app automatically track and adapt to a child’s changing gaming habits. Our ultimate vision is to scale this platform into a holistic youth wellness and safety ecosystem—using the incentive of gaming to keep kids organized, active, and digitally protected from online predators.
