Many students have educational documents in PDF format but find it difficult to read and understand long documents. Mwalimu Audio was created to transform these documents into clear and accessible audio lessons.
What it does
Mwalimu Audio converts a PDF document into an audio lesson. It extracts the text, identifies the important information, organizes it into a structured lesson and generates an MP3 audio file.
The user can choose between a simple reading mode and an intelligent educational mode with explanations, key points, revision questions and optional background music.
How we built it
The prototype was built with Python, the OpenAI API, PyMuPDF and Pydub. PyMuPDF extracts the PDF text, OpenAI analyzes and restructures the content, and Pydub prepares the final audio file.
Challenges
The main challenges were processing long PDF documents, keeping the generated lesson faithful to the original document and producing clear audio.
What's next
We plan to create a simple web interface, support more African languages, integrate WhatsApp and test the solution with students and teachers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
