Inspiration

We wanted to capture the satisfaction of growing a personal farm, with creatures whose relationships make placement matter. Mutation Ranch combines cozy ranch building with discovering how heat, water, fertility and minerals work together.

What it does

Players shape an isometric island, build habitats and canals, and discover nine creature forms. Each harvest creates choices: fulfill village orders, reserve supplies for specialists, or invest in the next discovery. Creature mastery unlocks garden decorations, while seasonal festivals and three showcases introduce new goals. The ranch and its progress persist between seasons.

How we built it

We used OpenAI Codex to develop the game through iterative prompting, implementation and playtesting. JavaScript powers the simulation, HTML and CSS provide the interface, Canvas 2D renders the ranch, and the Web Audio API generates sound. AI-generated creature and environment artwork, fonts and all game code are bundled into a self-contained HTML5 build.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was making each harvest lead to a meaningful decision. We balanced resource production, specialist upkeep and shipments so that placement and timing have consequences. We also refined isometric selection, movement previews, creature scale and menu layering to keep the growing ranch readable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The prototype supports complete, repeatable seasons with persistent ownership and progression. We completed different showcase strategies through the normal interface, verified an entire season offline, and confirmed that save/reload retained the ranch. All 29 automated tests pass.

What we learned

More currency alone does not make progression satisfying. Clear discovery projects, visible garden rewards and changing seasonal priorities give players stronger reasons to continue. Accurate forecasts also make experimentation more inviting because players can understand the consequences before committing.

What's next for Mutation Ranch

We want to expand the creature relationships, introduce new regions and deepen customization. Future social ranch visits could let players share their creations. These are planned extensions beyond the current single-player prototype.
