Inspiration
The inspiration behind the "Must Watch" Challenge stems from the desire to revolutionize the way individuals discover movies and TV shows. Recognizing the overwhelming choice available and the challenge of finding content that aligns with personal taste, we aimed to leverage the power of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), MySQL HeatWave, and Oracle APEX to create a solution that not only simplifies this discovery process but also personalizes it to each user's unique preferences.
What it does
The "Must Watch" Challenge introduces the MovieHub application, a platform designed to generate personalized recommendations for movies and TV shows. Utilizing OCI, MySQL HeatWave for high-performance query processing, and Oracle APEX for application development, MovieHub analyzes user preferences and viewing history to curate a list of "Must Watch" content tailored to each user.
How we built it
The construction of MovieHub was a multi-step process involving several key Oracle technologies:
- Creation of a MySQL HeatWave Database System: Setting up a robust database to handle complex queries and data storage.
- HeatWave Cluster Configuration for OLAP/AutoML: Leveraging HeatWave's capabilities for Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) to process and analyze data efficiently.
- Bastion Server Setup for Secure MySQL Data Access: Implementing a bastion server to securely manage access to the MySQL data.
- Data Preparation and Integration: Downloading, transforming, and integrating the MovieLens dataset into MySQL HeatWave to serve as the foundation for our recommendation system.
- Development of HeatWave AutoML Recommender System: Utilizing AutoML to create a sophisticated algorithm capable of generating personalized recommendations.
- Oracle APEX for Application Development: Building a low-code application with Oracle APEX, enhancing user experience through intuitive interfaces and seamless integration with REST SERVICES for MySQL.
Challenges we ran into
Throughout the development, we faced several challenges, including optimizing the HeatWave cluster for efficient OLAP operations and AutoML processes, ensuring data security while setting up the bastion server, and integrating large datasets into MySQL HeatWave. Developing an accurate and reliable recommender system using AutoML techniques also presented a significant learning curve.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully launching MovieHub stands as our major accomplishment. The application's ability to offer highly personalized recommendations through an intuitive, user-friendly interface marks a significant achievement. Overcoming technical challenges, particularly in optimizing MySQL HeatWave and implementing a robust AutoML recommender system, has been incredibly rewarding.
What we learned
This project deepened our understanding of Oracle technologies, including OCI, MySQL HeatWave, and Oracle APEX. We gained hands-on experience in data management, OLAP, AutoML, and application development. The process highlighted the importance of a secure, scalable infrastructure for data-driven applications and the power of machine learning in enhancing user experiences.
What's next for "Must Watch" Challenge
Looking ahead, we plan to refine MovieHub's recommendation algorithm for even greater accuracy and personalization. We aim to incorporate more diverse datasets and feedback loops to continuously improve the quality of recommendations. Expanding the application's features, such as integrating social sharing options and user reviews, will also be a focus. Additionally, exploring the potential for integrating more advanced machine learning models and expanding the application's scope to include other forms of entertainment are exciting future directions.
Future updates will also include the ability for users to add their images to the MovieHub App, making the experience even more personalized and engaging.
