Inspiration
Hey, it's Avery and Sebastian! We're both developers who grew up playing music, and music has been a way for us to express things that are difficult to put into words.
But writing a song usually means knowing how to play an instrument, compose music or produce it.
We built Muso because we wanted to make that experience accessible to anyone. You don't need to be a musician to turn something you feel into a song.
What it does
Muso is designed around two sides of a personal song: the person creating it and the person receiving it.
For the creator, Muso turns stories, memories and feelings into a personalized song. They can choose the musical style, generate or write lyrics, customize the artwork and shape the song around a specific person or moment.
For the recipient, we wanted it to feel like receiving a real gift, not just a link to a song. Songs can be unwrapped through a gift interaction, presented with customized artwork and a vinyl-inspired player that can be saved and replayed.
How we built it
- Swift + SwiftUI for the native iOS app
- Supabase for authentication, data and real-time updates
- Cloudflare R2 for file storage
- RevenueCat for subscriptions and purchases
- AVFoundation for audio playback and video exports
Challenges we ran into
Making musical choices approachable for people without music experience was one of our biggest challenges. We wanted Muso to feel friendly and intuitive, without requiring users to understand song structures or technical music terminology.
As we're both developers, we also had to push ourselves beyond just making things work and think deeply about the emotional experience, interactions, and design details throughout the app.
On the technical side, we worked through coordinating generation progress, credit-granting bugs, audio playback, animations, and video exports - all while keeping the experience smooth and engaging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re most proud of the experience we built around each song, not just the song itself.
We put a lot of thought into the small details, from the artwork and vinyl interactions to the gift-unwrapping experience.
Our goal was to make each song feel less like something generated and more like something special that you would want to give and come back to.
We’re also proud that we pushed ourselves beyond just building something functional and created an experience that feels thoughtful from start to finish.
What we learned
We learned that the experience around a song changes how the song feels.
The exact same song can feel completely different when it is simply generated on a screen, compared to when it has personal artwork, a story behind it and is unwrapped by someone you made it for.
It taught us that music isn't only about the audio. The meaning around it is what makes it special.
What's next for Muso
Next, we want to:
- Improve song and lyrics quality
- Expand personalization and gifting
- Build a natural viral loop around giving and receiving songs
Our priority is learning from real users and improving the journey from an idea to a song they’re excited to share.
