Inspiration
We aim to deliver a music production experience that is intuitive, easy, and playful. We reduce the barrier of entry for remixing music and 3D models and provide a holistic audio-visual experience. We are creating a platform for ever growing user-generated content through music and 3D co-creation with professional music and 3D artists.
What it does
BUILDING BLOCKS: In this experience, users are able to generate their own large-scale architecture by freely interacting with the blocks.
CREATING MUSIC: Music is created in a synesthetic way. The open-ended creative process illustrates a dynamic, non-linear, unpredictable structure with infinite potentials.
IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES: Musicraft ultimately leads to an immersive audio-visual feast when the player wanders around in the architecture created by themselves.
How we built it
- Technically, we aim to bring humanities to digital art. The game is set in a surreal aesthetics that blurs the boundary between digital and physical. It is mainly divided into three aspects: scene, interactive architecture, and visual effects.
- ENVIRONMENT: The project is located in a surreal natural environment, surrounded by plants surrounded by trees, and mountains, giving the experience a sense of alienation from reality. In the center of the scene is the platform where player build blocks and creates music compositions.
- Blocks: Each block stands for one kind of audio track in out game scene. Player intuitively manipulate the block to preview, add and delete the track. Every block has three portals that triggers different sound effect of the audio track. Player intuitively customize the audio by navigating and assembling the block.
- MUSIC composition: Music is created in a synesthetic way. Different interaction choice of user leads to different visual output.
Challenges we ran into
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We believe there is a market opportunity for a VR audio-visual gaming platform that encourages creation from both artists and users. Current music games are passive and 3D modeling tools have high learning curves. BeatsBlock combine the best of both worlds. We are proud that we deliver this audio-visual co-creation experience that is intuitive, easy, and playful. Without any former experience, the player actively participates in creating stunning musical compositions as well as surreal structures with provided blocks built by established artists.
What we learned
We learned a lot about VR development while working on this project. we gained a better understanding of the technical challenges and limitations of VR. We also learned how to polish better visual quality in Unity. In terms of teamwork, we also learned the importance of being flexible and adaptable when working on a project, as sometimes things don't go as planned and it's necessary to pivot and come up with new solutions.
