Inspiration

I was inspired by an earlier idea I had to make use of the Spotify API, something I've wanted to do but have never done.

What it does

This app allows you to add your friends and explore their music via a scrollable "for-you" style page. Users can also see their playlists and top tracks, as well as their friends.

How we built it

This app was built with Bootstrap, JavaScript, Flask, and utilizes the Spotify Web API and Spotify Web Player SDK. The database and authentication was handle via Firebase.

Challenges we ran into

There were many challenges, such as time constraint, team size (just me) and using new technologies. I had to use flask, which I haven't used that much, and bootstrap, which I was rusty on.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud of making the MVP and having a working product. I think coming into the hackathon I was worried about doing it alone but it all worked out in the end.

What we learned

I became more familiar with Flask, and I also familiarized myself with the Spotify Web API and the player SDK as well.

What's next for music space

I want to develop this app and make it a fully fledged application, and maybe use a different tech stack. The one I used for the hackathon was purely for convenience and speed. Music Space is something I can see as a real app with a real use case, and there are so many other angles I could approach. For example, the original idea was to make a centralized for you page which would blend the music taste of all your friends, this could easily be done. Other ideas I have include implementing a recommendation engine using the Web API in order to make the for you page an infinite scrolling feed. There are so many ways to go about developing the app and I'm excited to work on it after the hackathon.
