*Note: Looking for feedback/expertise/advice from customers, investors, mentors, & consultants. Also, this is adaptive and adoptive. My aim is that this is easy to communicate across, there’s a shared general idea, and a way to move forward. I plan to test what you say, change wording/take things off. This will be a 20 page minimum document with charts and tables. Every section will take paragraphs. Ideas explained and the document will take on it’s own life. It is my understanding small changes will have a rippling effect and can incur new costs/new responsibility. Additionally, the document is not static but changing constantly because of the rate of technology and information. It will be thorough and understandable for people not in the room with me.“Statistics from industry associations, data from government sources, & financials from similar businesses.”

“The idea is serving an unmet need and solving an unserviced need. The hope is that the product/service could be expanded to gain additional customer groups. We know who our potential buyers are and have a clear value proposition for our potential buyers. We know what it takes to start our business. We know what it will take to obtain funding. We have a plan to fund our business startup. We are ready to work hard to achieve our business goals. We understand the challenges lying ahead and have a plan to tackle them”

Hey guys In order for me to make original pop tracks, I need grants/donations/gifts so that I’m able to purchase type beats (along with hopefully pro-bono/gratis/barter work too) that sound like what’s on the radio. I also will use that capital to go to a recording studio to get help from audio engineers to manipulate my vocals/allow me to use their equipment/autotune software/and to pay songwriters. I’d estimate that this is thousands in financing. This is what I have dreamt of since high school..only now am I able to explain my imagination into words. I’ll need your support the whole time through as when the songs are released, if my business model and marketing plan work (see below) then I’ll break even or more. If I do net profit, then I can reinvest the disposable capital into making more songs, better music videos, cooler merch designs, a concert, and more. My short term goal is to obtain seed-stage funding to launch and become a self sustaining venture that grows.

Music makes me feel good and it lets me express the different emotions and thoughts I have as a human. I enjoy sharing stories and it’s really awesome to know others like what I’m making.

My first song is about me sailing in the islands then visiting my brother and sister in the city (New York City). It’s to a girl but not someone I know so she’s an imaginary friend which is why I’m calling my album Imaginary Friends.

I’m trying to figure out how I can help one person’s life by what I make. I think if it can provide them even temporarily happiness and peace that’s something I am ok with. Ultimately I would like it to be a grand scale that contributes to the collective art of humanity. I will strive to make art that impacts people’s lives in some aspect.

PROBLEM

(What customer pain is the business solving?)

Inspiration: Music makes me feel good and it lets me express the different emotions and thoughts I have as a human. I enjoy sharing stories and it’s really awesome to know others like what I’m making. I think over time I have acquired more words from our language which has allowed me to write lyrics and share more. Art is actually something that I like because, while science often tells me the truths, I still want to express my feelings beyond logic.

This is what I have dreamt of since high school..only now am I able to explain my imagination into words. I’ll need your support the whole time through as when the songs are released

SOLUTION

(How is the business solving that problem?)

One article I came across says these are ways music makes an impact:

  1. Brings us together
  2. Sets the mood
  3. Makes us smarter
  4. Creates memories

I’m trying to figure out how I can help one person’s life by what I make. I think if it can provide them even temporarily with happiness and peace that’s something I am more than ok with. Ultimately I would like it to be a grand scale that contributes to the collective art of humanity. I will strive to make art that impacts people’s lives up-leveling their condition in some aspect or multidimensionally.

“an independent musician pays all of the costs. Studio time, manufacturing of the recordings (CD or vinyl), publicity legal etc. Other costs are usually cuts form sales. for example, distributors are paid a percentage of the net sales. Agents take a percentage of the gross appearance fees and a manager is paid a percentage of the artist's gross income. You can find very helpful articles on this topic online. I have written a few that are on my website.”

“ 1.) Selling Merch in your site, on social media and via online indie stores like Bandcamp - The most sold items are CDs, Digital Download Codes, Vinyl, and even Cassette Tapes). Also popular:

T-shirts and hoodies

Bags and hats

Drink cozies

Posters

Pins, stickers and key-chains

Mugs and flasks

Offer merch at different price points to satisfy the needs of all your fans. Also, be sure to bundle items together to offer discounts. If a fan buys a shirt you might get $20, but offer a bundle of a shirt, CD and sticker for $30 and everyone wins.

2.) Promoting and Monetizing Online Concerts - Streaming live concerts is becoming a great way to perform for an audience and generate income. The simplest way to monetize an event would be to promote a URL where fans can purchase albums and merch during the broadcast itself. There are also online platforms that will charge fans a fee to get access. Here are a few to check out:

Twitch This will be BITs concert streaming partner https://www.twitch.tv/

StageIt https://www.stageit.com/site/landing

IBM (yes, IBM has a live-streaming video platform) https://video.ibm.com/

Social Media: Facebook Live, Instagram Live, YouTube. These streams are more difficult to monetize, but you can set up a separate tip jar on your site. (see options below)

3.) Fan Subscriptions - It allows fans to support your ongoing career by committing to small amounts in exchange for fun rewards. Apart from giving you a predictable and sustainable revenue stream, these strategies can increase fan engagement and loyalty amongst your community. Patreon https://www.patreon.com/ is the most popular fan subscription site, but Bandzoogle https://bandzoogle.com/ offers a no-fee alternative.

4.) Tip Jar & Donations - Different platforms give fans the possibility of tipping a few (or many) dollars while streaming your music, during online live performances or just to be supportive. Here are some options:

Songtradr

Jamjar

DigitalTipJar

5.) Crowdfunding a Future Album or Tour - Crowdfunding is a great way to raise money for a music project. When a crowdfunding campaign is done right, it could help you get the exposure and the backers you need to launch your next big idea. Here are some of the best platforms:

Indiegogo

Kickstarter

ArtistShare

6.) Synchronization Licenses - This is when you’re paid per use of the song linked with a moving image (i.e. YouTube or Vimeo video). For example, if someone uploads content to a streaming platform that includes your original song, you must be paid a royalty fee for that use.

7.) Giving online music lessons - Offering music lessons could also be a great way to earn an extra income. You can teach via different platforms, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, Whatsapp, or offer lessons using paid streaming platforms for larger groups and people could pay you for sessions directly through your website.“ http://www.artists.bandsintown.com/blog/how-to-replace-income-lost-from-canceled-live-shows?locale=en

Inspiration

I think it would be fun to incorporate a similar style to my videos. E.g Justin Bieber’s Skrillex music video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nntGTK2Fhb0 did it. And The Chainsmokers in Sick Boy: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eACohWVwTOc

Also, I thought Bazzi flying in this video is sweet: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc71AmT_b2k 1:00

And Maroon 5: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4uTNVumfm84 at 1:00 where paint comes off his girlfriends face.

I like cool chill instrumentals and/or drops in them that make my heart flutter/change my life. Some noises include the vox mouse sound, high hats, and the extra singer effect. For videos, ones that make me feel good and evoke emotions are what I enjoy.

FYI -

Audio engineers and dj’s can use artificial intelligence now!

“Now, there’s an entire industry built around AI services for creating music, including the aforementioned Flow Machines, IBM Watson Beat, Google Magenta’s NSynth Super, Jukedeck, Melodrive, Spotify’s Creator Technology Research Lab, and Amper Music.”

AI to generate melodies, percussions, and chords. And deep learning networks to analyze large amounts of data. Producers feed it from dance hits to disco classics to find patterns to pick up on things like chords, lengths, tempo, and how notes relate to one another so it can write its own melodies.

AI kicks out midi = sheet music of how melodies should be played

IBM Watson’s is open source/public facing, Magenta’s NSynth Super you have to go on GitHub to unpack the developer language, and Amper is front facing/intuitive and simple.

“The idea that artificial intelligence can compose music is scary for a lot of people, including me. But music-making AI software has advanced so far in the past few years that it’s no longer a frightening novelty; it’s a viable tool that can and is being used by producers to help in the creative process..” Source: https://www.theverge.com/2018/8/31/17777008/artificial-intelligence-taryn-southern-amper-music

“ The rise of DIY artists, and the vast consumption of their music, have obviously exploded thanks to Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, Apple Music, et. al, and the ease with which homespun acts can distribute their music to these platforms. It estimates that last year self-releasing artists generated $643 million worldwide, collected by platforms like TuneCore, CD Baby, Distrokid and Ditto Music.

TuneCore. Arguably the market leader in self-releasing-artist distribution, the company last week announced that it had collected more than $500 million for independent artists within the 18 months to end of March 2019 — a figure that doesn’t include publishing income or money from YouTube UGC. Perhaps even more impressively, TuneCore’s DIY artist earnings hit $86 million in the first three months of 2019, very close to an eyebrow-raising $1 million per day.“ https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/diy-artists-will-earn-more-than-1-billion-this-year-no-wonder-the-major-labels-want-their-business-830863/

STATUS AND TIMELINE

My first song is about me sailing in the islands then visiting my brother and sister in the city (New York City). It’s to a girl but not someone I know so she’s an imaginary friend which is why I’m calling my album Imaginary Friends.

I went in front of one film club of about 30 and another with 25 to inquire for music video help. Additionally, a singing group of 15 or so. I also spoke with around 6 professors on different occasions and attended approximately 5 workshops throughout a semefon how to use cameras and software.

Objections:

  • I’m embarrassed about putting myself “out there” and getting identified as music. I am much more than just music. It’s just one part of me.
  • It’s difficult doing things on my own but hopefully I get better and things pay off
  • I compare myself to others too like appearance and what not
  • I worry about people judging
  • I almost always lose followers. That’s something that concerns me frequently
  • I don’t have PhD in music or any degrees in that specialized knowledge

Advertising obstacles:

How come an advertisement I initiated through Instagram that reached 2,027 people resulted in 0 additional follows?

I’m making pop music and would like to receive a fan base. I chose those countries because they are way less costly for advertising but worked decently well (for likes). Spending $1, I received about 420 likes.

However, my goal is to increase engagement on social media (likes AND follows) as well as the number of listeners/followers on platforms where my music is hosted, such as Spotify - which is where the “learn more” button directs the people advertised to.

The best case scenario is I reduce the advertising, and rather, people organically share through network effects.

In order to increase followers, likes, shares on social media and my music platforms.. is it that I need to:

1) Increase my budget, doubling down on the current adset 2) Pivot/iterate the current ad set 3) Run a/b tests on different adsets, through the Business Manager (instead of Instagram) then do that look-alike thing

I’d estimate that this is thousands in financing. , if my business model and marketing plan work (see below) then I’ll break even or more. If I do net profit, then I can reinvest the disposable capital into making more songs, better music videos, cooler merch designs, a concert, and more. My short term goal is to obtain seed-stage funding to launch and become a self sustaining venture that grows.

Inspiration: Several years ago, I rented time at Trod Nossel studios in Wallingford. I produced an acapella version of the Justin Bieber boyfriend. They added background and effects which I selected. When it was completed the producer said, “this is one of the best covers I have ever heard”. I set that aside and went on to finish highschool and to college. People have said that I may have gotten the gene from my grandmother who was asked to sing with the Glenn Miller band in WWII.

What I do: Inspired by that, I would like to take my passion and the inspiration and guidance that I’ve received from my recent instructor and singing coach James Caputo who trained under Pavarotti. He said to me “if you are more serious you could be professional”.

Challenges: The sources of capital will be friends and family to take my original song in a local studio that I have selected. The cost will be under $200.

“might be nice to have some more variety in terms of overall structure, but these days a lot of pop songs seems to be like "moments in time", more minimalist - though I like more structural changes personally. ..How polished do you feel these are - in other words, how much time have you spent on fine-tuning the balance, rhythmic entrances, stereo insertion points (where are the instruments and voices in the stereo spectrum?), dynamic consistency (is everything the right volume?)”

Objections are I am not always on tune, I am 23 and I know of only 2 superstars older than that, I am not an audio engineer, I am not film maker, I am not a skilled at any particular instrument, I am not necessarily comfortable in front of people singing, I am not genetically competitive to models, I have opinions, I do not have the money to pay for the projects, I do not know how to get to a billion views, and I do not know of any superstars I can work with.

Accomplishments that I’m proud of: When I was at Fairfield University, I was a walk on and tried out for their accapella group called the Bensonians. Unbenounced to me I made the team. Certainly this won’t levitate me to stardom but I thought at the very least I would give it a try.

What I learned: My next step is to take one of my original songs and to record it to musicbaby and put them to videos on YouTube and hearnow and make money.
