Music Box

Inspiration

We wanted to create a space where music lovers could connect beyond playlists. Many people discover great songs but have no way to share or discuss them with friends or find others with similar tastes. Music Box was inspired by the idea of turning music discovery into a social experience.

What it does

Music Box allows users to: • Share and review songs with friends • Discover new music through recommendations • Connect with people who have similar tastes • Track and discuss favorite tracks

How we built it

We built Music Box using: • Frontend: React for a responsive and interactive user interface • Backend: Node.js with Express to handle requests and user data • Database: MongoDB to store user profiles, songs, and reviews • APIs: Integrated Spotify API for song data and playback • Features like user connections and song recommendations were built using collaborative filtering algorithms.

Challenges we ran into • Matching users with similar tastes: Designing an efficient algorithm to suggest connections based on song preferences was tricky. • Real-time updates: Ensuring that shared reviews and recommendations appeared instantly for friends required optimizing our backend and database queries. • API limitations: Some song metadata from Spotify was limited or inconsistent, requiring creative workarounds.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of • A fully functional platform where users can share, review, and connect over music • Personalized recommendations and connection suggestions working reliably • Clean, responsive UI that makes exploring and sharing music enjoyable

What we learned • Building social features requires careful thought about user experience and data flow • Collaborative filtering can create meaningful connections between users • Handling API limitations and database optimization are crucial for real-time apps

What’s next for Music Box • Adding collaborative playlists for groups of friends • Improving recommendation algorithms using machine learning • Mobile app version for easier access and notifications • Social features like following users, commenting, and sharing playlists
