MUSEYO
Inspiration
Indonesia’s museums are rich in artifacts and history, but most young people find museum visits boring, static, and uninspiring. We wanted to change that. Our inspiration came from imagining:
“What if every artifact could talk—share its own story, its own personality, and maybe even roast you back?”
With MUSEYO, we want to turn silent objects into living storytellers, making cultural heritage fun, interactive, and accessible for everyone.
What it does
MUSEYO is a mobile app that lets users “chat” with real-world artifacts—just by taking a photo in a museum or at a cultural site.
- Photo & Identify: Snap a photo of any object or artifact; AI instantly recognizes and identifies it.
- Artifact Chat: The app roleplays as the artifact. You can ask anything—history, origin, fun facts, or just banter.
- Personalized Storytelling: Every conversation is unique, making learning about culture and history engaging and memorable.
How we built it
- Frontend: React Native for cross-platform mobile development.
- Backend: Node.js (Express) with MongoDB for user and artifact data.
- AI/ML:
- Object Recognition: OpenAI Images and vision.
- Chatbot Engine: OpenAI GPT (LLM) with custom prompt engineering for artifact roleplay.
- Other tools: MongoDB for auth and data storage.
Challenges we ran into
- Localizing Artifact Stories: Creating unique, accurate, and fun narratives for hundreds of different artifacts with limited data.
- Latency & Demo Stability: Ensuring chat responses and identification work smoothly (especially in spotty museum WiFi).
- UX for All Ages: Designing an experience that works for both Gen Z and older users, including accessibility features (text-to-speech, contrast mode).
- Balancing Fun & Accuracy: Making sure our AI is engaging, but never misleading or culturally insensitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- First-of-its-kind in Indonesia: No other local app brings artifacts to life with AI-powered chat in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Inclusive UX: Accessibility features so everyone (including visually impaired users) can explore and learn.
- Solo-team magic: We built and shipped a working MVP in less than 32 hours, with late-night breakthroughs and zero sleep.
What we learned
- Tech alone isn’t enough: Storytelling and user experience make or break adoption—especially for younger audiences.
- Local context is key: Regional language, cultural references, and personality matter (our AI got sassy!).
What's next for MUSEYO
- Expand artifact database: Partner with more museums and cultural sites to cover Indonesia’s diverse heritage.
- Voice & AR chat: Enable voice conversations and AR experiences for deeper immersion.
- Offline Mode: Preload stories for areas with no internet—especially important for rural/remote museums and schools.
- Teacher & school integration: Make MUSEYO a tool for education everywhere, not just museums.
- Open API for communities: Let local storytellers or museum staff contribute content and narratives.
- Support more languages: Add local languages and dialects for hyper-personal cultural education.
