Inspiration
Many of us are First-Generation students who had little to no help during our housing process. We wanted to help other students who may feel the same way we did: lost, stressed, and hopeless.
What it does
Mundo is a personalized website meant to help first-generation college students find housing near their college campus. It has a detailed onboarding process based on a users’ school, citizenship status, and budgetary needs. It helps with turning this overwhelming process and breaking it down into more digestible steps, understanding rent affordability, and finding options specifically tailored to a student's situation.
How we built it
Our team used Google Gemini to help with the ideating process as well as Notability for our initial sketches. Afterwards, we solely used Figma to design and prototype Muno.
Challenges we ran into
In the beginning, we had trouble defining our scope for this project. We initially wanted to create a gamified task management app but decided our scope was too broad and not achievable during the time frame we were given. However, we learned more about the ideating process and decided on an idea that we were all passionate about.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of turning a long time of ideation into a fully successful high-fi mockup website, especially after struggling to narrow down our project scope in the beginning. We surveyed more than 60 people in less than 24 hours, and got useful responses that helped us understand our target audience even better. This helped our application in knowing what we should implement and how to maintain user retention, while also delivering an application that students would use on a daily basis. We are also proud of how we were able to become such a cohesive team that enjoyed working and getting to know each other!
What we learned
Our team learned about how to navigate the ideation process and how important it is to identify the scope of a project, while also narrowing it down to work within the timeframe. We also learned how to delegate work based on everyone’s strong suits since we all came from different backgrounds in design.
What's next for Muno
We see a future where Muno can offer more peace within the endless chaos that is the college experience. Beyond the scope of finding housing, we’d want to expand Muno’s ability to also help first-generation students from all backgrounds on how to build their first resume, find jobs/internships, network, and even how to file taxes on their own.
