Inspiration

Mothers manage the heart and finances of the household, juggling meal planning, grocery bills, home repairs, and savings goals while carrying an immense mental load. Traditional personal finance apps are either too generic, overly complex, or built around restrictive, stressful budgets.

We built MumWise to be a compassionate, empowering financial copilot designed specifically for busy mums. Our mission is to democratize financial independence by turning everyday household decisions—like grocery shopping, bulk cooking, and DIY renovations—into practical, actionable opportunities to save and build family wealth.

What it does

MumWise combines intelligent financial modeling with helpful AI assistants to make everyday money management effortless:

  • 🛒 Smart Shopping Swaps: Helps mums find cheaper, high-quality alternatives to brand-name groceries and household items to cut monthly spending.
  • 🍲 Batch Cooking Cost Calculator: Breaks down recipe costs per serving and analyzes bulk-buying savings to drastically lower family food costs.
  • 🔨 Home Renovation & DIY Budget Guide: Compares full professional quotes versus hybrid DIY approaches with realistic material savings estimates.
  • 📈 Savings Goal Tracker: Lets users visualize progress toward financial freedom with intuitive progress indicators and expense logging.
  • 💳 Seamless RevenueCat Monetization: Provides flexible access tiers including a free starter tier, monthly Pro and Premium subscription plans, and consumable Credit Packs for heavy AI analysis.

How we built it

  • Mobile Client (Flutter): Built a high-performance cross-platform Flutter application utilizing Material 3, clean typography, responsive cards, and local session caching via shared_preferences.
  • Monetization Engine (RevenueCat): Integrated the latest purchases_flutter SDK to power both auto-renewing subscriptions and one-time consumable credit packs. We synchronized entitlements and offerings seamlessly with Google Play Billing Library 8.0.0+.
  • Backend API (Flask on Azure): Deployed a lightweight Python Flask backend on Microsoft Azure App Service with SQLite for user data, transaction syncing, and expense tracking.
  • AI Intelligence (Google Gemini 3 Flash): Leveraged Gemini 3 Flash with thinking parameters and Google Search grounding to deliver up-to-date, structured cost analyses and localized pricing.

Challenges we ran into

  • Modern Play Billing & SDK Integration: Migrating to Google Play Billing Library 8.0.0 requirements and integrating the latest RevenueCat v9 SDK architecture (PurchaseResult and customer entitlement tracking).
  • Android Toolchain & Kotlin DSL: Configuring modern Kotlin DSL (build.gradle.kts) with Core Library Desugaring for background notifications while managing Windows path toolchain constraints.
  • AI Prompt Engineering for Pragmatic Finance: Refining Gemini prompts to deliver realistic, mathematically grounded cost breakdowns and actionable advice rather than abstract financial jargon.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Full-Stack Execution: Built and shipped a complete end-to-end ecosystem—from AI backend to custom RevenueCat paywalls to a signed Android App Bundle live on Google Play Closed Testing.
  • Seamless Subscriber Syncing: Linked user IDs and emails directly between our custom Azure backend and RevenueCat Subscriber Attributes, providing live customer analytics on the dashboard.
  • Zero-Stress User Experience: Created an interface that feels encouraging, peaceful, and empowering rather than intimidating.

What we learned

  • How to leverage RevenueCat to manage multi-tiered subscription offerings alongside consumable credit packs within a single unified Flutter codebase.
  • How to navigate the latest Google Play 2026 developer requirements, including Declarative Gradle setups, Data Safety declarations, and Closed Testing rollouts.

  • Receipt & Invoice OCR: Integrating Gemini Multimodal Vision so mums can snap a photo of their physical grocery receipts for instant cost breakdowns.
  • Global Currency & Store Localization: Adding specialized regional supermarket catalogs for mums across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and Nigeria.
  • iOS App Store Launch: Expanding the Flutter codebase to Apple App Store with RevenueCat StoreKit 2 integration.
  • Community Recipe & Swap Hub: Allowing mums to share their own tested money-saving bulk recipes with the community.
