Inspiration

Boredom comes from repetitive stimulation of the brain by the same stimuli, so that your body's reward system can no longer be turned on. Therefore, we aim for something that could trigger people's curiosity while not spending too much time and brain energy on it, which relaxes people's mind and increases their productivity. We learnt that a lot of people are passionate about capsule machines that originated from Japan; then, we thought of adapting the mechanism, putting it into a smaller size, and making it customizable and multifunctional.

What it does

Users can put different notes in the balls according to their need. For example, if one enjoys different types of tea, he/she could put down different flavours of tea, and with each spin of the capsule machine, he/she knows what to drink to reboost his/her energy. It not only allows the person to unconsciously stand up from the seat and moves a bit, but also stimulate one's brain with new flavours while avoiding complex decision making processes. The drawer can be used to stored small things that are easy to loose but necessary in office settings, like keys and paper clips. The lid can be easily removed to act as a smartphone stand.

How we built it

We tried to think of how to make the We used Autodesk Inventor to build each part of the model. They are mainly separated in to four parts: the drawer, the main frame of the machine, the lid (including the support for phone stand) and the rotating rod for the major function.

Challenges we ran into

We hope that the product can be sustainable, not only in the materials we used, but also people would prefer to leave them on the table and not get uninterested the second week after they bought it. We also want it to satisfy the majority of the population's preference, so that our product market has a larger demand, enough for profit with lower individual price. However, it has always been difficult to make everyone happy, and make it simple and customizable simultaneously.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

First, we are proud of finishing the entire 3D printed model in very limited amount of time. We are also proud of our final design to fulfill our purposes while not being too complicated.

What we learned

We learnt that it is crucial to understand people's needs by figuring out the underlying problem - the lack of new stimulation of the brain's reward system in this case. Subsequently, we are able to design a product that maximize long-term cost-effectiveness by satifying a larger targeting group, using more sustainable materials.

What's next for Multifunctional Capsule Machine

Production in assembly line. The materials are recyclable, promoting a sustainable. Collaboration with other companies for greener product line is preferrable. Discover whether the product actually meets customer's needs and our expectations by sending out samples with a follow-up survey.
