Inspiration
We were inspired by our diverse ethnic backgrounds, and combined our unique languages that we speak with the ability to virtually draw in a coloring book. We have little to no experience with coding an entire project or game, so we were very much inspired by a basic idea and translated it into code.
What it does
Multicolortural offers blank coloring images of monuments in different regions around the world, and allows users to fill in different parts of the image with the color of their choosing from our palette. It's an interactive game that encourages users to unleash their personal creativity in an artistic way.
How we built it
We buitl Multicolortural on Replit.com, using their Java and HTML/CSS platforms to combine a Java-based game with an HTML/CSS website. We divided ourselves into front-end and back-end developers, with two people working on the website and two working on making the gameplay. We constructed a functioning game in Java and attached user-friendly buttons and links onto the HTML/CSS website by adding different elements.
Challenges we ran into
None of us had any HTML/CSS experience heading into this hackathon, and we had to use our limited coding experience to construct both a website and a game. For us, as beginners, we had to learn as we wrote code, watching videos and reading tutorial pages on how to construct certain elements. We spent much time refining and correcting our code, as we are HTML/CSS beginners, and had to spend hours creating and checking elements as well as links.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the fact that we managed to create both a game in Java and a fully functioning website in HTML/CSS, even as beginners to web development. We created different translations of our game in various languages that we speak, including Tamil and Spanish, with detailed instructions to make our game more accessible to a larger user demographic. We're extremely proud of how efficient we were able to work together, and we are happy with how much we were able to complete.
What we learned
We learned about new elements of web design and development, along with specific elements and parts of designing a fully working game and website. We also learned about the value of teamwork, and made sure that we could communicate our needs and asking others for help, whether they be mentors or fellow teammates.
What's next for Multicolortural
We plan on creating more image options along with more languages for translation, which proves to be exciting in terms of accessibility.
