Introduction
Our project directly addresses the challenge to redesign sport and physical activity through the power of sportification, gamification, and learnification. Our project also addresses how to get the young and the not-so-young physically active, where participants, fans, and community groups will all want to be players and be part of the fun. Our solution is ideal for individuals, families, and schools while adhering to Covid-19 health and safety protocols.
Our Goal The original goal was to create and validate a ‘Multiball in a box solution”, a private semi-automated sanitized iGames room where individuals and families could book time and play MultiBall. The expectation was that this MultiBall in a box solution would be self-financing, sustainable, and revenue-generating, while this is achievable based on our financial modeling, we also discovered that partnering with universities sports arenas, schools and clubs would be more inclusive, accessible and attainable and indeed offer revenue-generating capabilities for the stakeholders and offer more long term physical activity benefits.
The MultiBall iGames Wall is an interactive sport, game, and learning platform that connects digital games with all ball sports to promote the fun of movement and motivation to practice sports. Applications have been developed for MultiBall, which offer a varied gaming experience thanks to visual and auditory elements, increasing levels of difficulty, and easy-to-understand gameplay. The games are designed to combine physical exercise and cognitive skills. The focus is on promoting motor skills, spatial perception, and improving hand-eye coordination.
The MultiBall system consists of a sensor frame, a console with an integrated sound system, a computer, and a camera that records, analyzes, and converts the players' movements in front of the wall into action in the game. The game is played with all ball types and sizes from 5 cm, which can be thrown, kicked, or played with rackets. The sensor frame detects the ball hitting the wall in real-time and triggers an action in the game.
Interactive educational games such as “Math Mission” and “Countries” impart knowledge in a playful way, while “Memory” trains memory and reaction speed. Games like “Darts”, “Targets” or “Goal” promote accuracy and anticipation. “Monster Match”, “Space Invaders” or “Ocean” are designed for fun to keep children moving with entertaining animations.
Inspired by the Global Sports Challenge new games have been ideated for the education of the UN SDGs and Global Facts along with Geography and Biology. Our games will be designed to help with behavioral change for a kinder and more sustainable society.
Resources and next steps to implement
The resources required to evaluate and implement our idea are a safe and secure space along with adequate financial resources. A pilot project in a university sports arena or a soccer club/GAA club would be our recommended next steps. The MultiBall in a box solution would follow after the pilot for further testing and validation.
