Inspiration

Electrical faults are among the leading causes of residential and industrial fires, resulting in equipment damage, operational downtime, financial losses, and risks to human life. While traditional protection systems such as circuit breakers and fuses are effective at interrupting dangerous electrical conditions, they often react only after a fault has occurred. We were inspired to create a smarter solution that could move beyond reactive protection toward proactive prevention. Our goal was to combine IoT, machine learning, cloud computing, and intelligent agent technologies to develop an autonomous system capable of detecting, classifying, isolating, and communicating electrical hazards before they escalate into major safety incidents.

What it does

The Multi-Sensor Electrical Fault Detection & Isolation Agent continuously monitors electrical systems using multiple sensors, including current, voltage, temperature, and environmental sensors. Real-time data is transmitted to a cloud-based analytical framework where machine learning models evaluate operating conditions and classify potential faults.

When a hazardous condition is detected, the system automatically isolates the affected circuit, records the event, and generates real-time alerts. Through natural language explanations powered by generative AI, users receive easy-to-understand descriptions of the detected fault, associated risks, and recommended actions. The system provides monitoring, fault diagnosis, event logging, and emergency response capabilities for both domestic and industrial electrical environments.

How We Built It

We designed the solution using a combination of edge computing, cloud services, machine learning, and intelligent agent technologies.

Electrical sensors collect voltage, current, and temperature measurements. AWS IoT Core securely receives real-time sensor data from monitoring devices. Amazon SageMaker trains and deploys machine learning models capable of recognizing different fault patterns. AWS Lambda processes incoming events and triggers automated safety actions. Agent Core orchestrates communication between system components and coordinates decision-making workflows. Amazon Bedrock transforms technical fault information into natural language alerts and actionable recommendations. Amazon Alexa provides voice-based interaction and emergency notifications. A monitoring dashboard displays circuit status, fault location, historical records, and system health metrics.

Together, these technologies form an intelligent end-to-end electrical safety ecosystem capable of monitoring, analyzing, and responding to hazardous electrical events autonomously.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of the most significant challenges was developing a fault classification system capable of distinguishing among multiple electrical fault types in both residential and industrial environments. Faults such as overloads, short circuits, arc faults, insulation failures, and transient disturbances often exhibit similar electrical signatures, making accurate classification difficult.

Additional challenges included:

Limited availability of high-quality electrical fault datasets. Variations in operating conditions between residential and industrial systems. Sensor noise and measurement inconsistencies. Balancing real-time system responsiveness with computational efficiency. Integrating multiple AWS services into a coordinated decision-making architecture. Designing a scalable framework capable of future expansion and deployment.

Despite these obstacles, we successfully developed a functional proof-of-concept demonstrating autonomous fault detection, isolation, and notification.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are proud to have developed a working architecture that combines machine learning, IoT technologies, cloud services, and intelligent agents into a single integrated safety platform.

This project provided valuable experience in the integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT devices, cloud computing, and safety-critical system design. We learned that developing intelligent fault detection systems extends beyond building machine learning models and requires careful consideration of sensor reliability, data quality, system interoperability, response time, and user communication.

We also learned that the success of predictive safety systems depends heavily on the availability of representative training data and robust fault labeling. Furthermore, integrating generative AI into monitoring systems offers significant potential to simplify technical information and improve human decision-making during emergency situations.

What's Next for Multi-Sensor Electrical Fault Detection & Isolation Agent

Future development will focus on improving fault detection accuracy, system scalability, and autonomous decision-making capabilities.

Planned enhancements include:

Expanding fault datasets for improved machine learning performance. Implementing advanced sensor fusion for more reliable diagnostics. Incorporating thermal imaging and machine vision technologies. Developing predictive maintenance capabilities to identify equipment degradation before failure. Integrating autonomous robotic inspection platforms for hazardous environments. Adding mobile and cloud-based monitoring applications. Exploring Digital Twin technologies for real-time simulation and system analysis. Enhancing the AI agent's reasoning capabilities to support more complex safety decisions.

Ultimately, our vision is to transform conventional electrical protection systems into intelligent, self-monitoring safety ecosystems capable of predicting, preventing, and responding to electrical hazards before they become catastrophic events
