Inspiration

Mukana was inspired by youth like Tendai, a bright but financially constrained 19-year-old who dropped out of school because of teenage pregnance and lacked a pathway to turn her self-taught digital skills into income and could not continue with school while taking care of her baby at the same time. Across Zimbabwe, many young people face similar barriers: unemployment, limited education access, and a mismatch between skills and market needs. Mukana aims to bridge this gap with an AI-powered, mobile-accessible platform that turns learning into real earning opportunities.

What it does

Mukana is a mobile AI platform that guides youth from skills assessment to income generation. Intelligent Skills Assessment: AI quiz identifies strengths, career goals, and skill gaps; generates personalized learning paths. Adaptive Learning Hub: Micro-learning modules from Akello Library, offline-first, gamified, and personalized. AI Mentor Matching: Matches mentors and mentees using various factors; supports messaging and structured mentorship. Opportunity Marketplace: AI predicts gig success, verifies skills, and tracks applications; helps users move from micro-tasks to stable jobs. Portfolio & Credentials: Auto-generated portfolios, verifiable credentials, and mentor endorsements. Earnings & Impact Tracking: EcoCash integration for instant payments.

How we built it

Mukana uses a modern, mobile-first tech stack: Tech Stack: React Native, Node.js, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, WebSockets, TensorFlow, scikit-learn, GitHub Actions. Process: User research, architecture design, MVP creation, iterative testing with youth. AI Architecture: Skill gap analysis, mentor matching formulas, and neural networks for gig success predictions.

Challenges we ran into

We faced several major challenges building this platform. Many people in Zimbabwe don't have reliable internet, especially in rural areas, so the app needed to work offline. Zimbabwe has different languages (English, Shona, Ndebele), different reading levels, and unique cultural needs that required careful localization. EcoCash's technical documentation was confusing and their test system kept breaking, making payment integration difficult. The biggest challenge was time - with all the creativity we had in mind, we couldn't build absolutely everything. We also had close to no funds for services like servers and cloud resources.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Mukana works even without internet, so learners can study anytime, anywhere.
  2. Content updates intelligently, making learning smooth and data-friendly.
  3. Our AI helps users understand their skill gaps and guides them on what to learn next.
  4. Mentors are matched thoughtfully to each learner, creating meaningful guidance.
  5. The platform predicts which opportunities users are most likely to succeed at.
  6. Learning adapts to each person’s pace, keeping it engaging and relevant.
  7. Instant mobile payments let learners earn without needing a bank account.
  8. Multi-language support and familiar platforms like WhatsApp make it accessible to all.
  9. Mentorship and opportunities stay high-quality through careful vetting and checks.
  10. All of this runs on a reliable, scalable technology system built for growth.

What we learned

we learned to combine ML predictions with rule-based logic for safety and transparency Working with African fintech is challenging because documentation is limited and test systems are unreliable Partnering with trusted organizations like Akello Library will give us credibility that advertising can't buy. Solving real problems for real people is more fulfilling than building technology just because it's interesting.

What's next for Mukana

Mukana is working towards supporting visual learners by using advanced AI models that turn complex lessons into simple videos and visuals. We also plan to partner with Econet so learners can access Mukana through a toll-free number, making learning possible even without data.

We’re going to introduce corporate training tools to help companies upskill their teams and forming international certification partnerships so our users can earn globally recognized credentials. To deliver a more personalized experience for every learner, we’re investing in powerful AI technologies like deep learning, NLP, and computer vision.
